So how will I know if and when I have the dreaded V10 cam wear?

Seems like we NA drivers walk a tightrope between killing the cams or the DPF's with our oil choices, now that we can no longer buy low ash 40W.

How many miles to you have on yours? I think the cam wear started around 140Kish miles on my rig. I could feel the idle was rougher when my foot was on the brake pedal. It doesn't take very long to pull a valve cover and take a look. Take a look at the tappets, if they are dished out around the edges, then the lobe is bad. Also run your finger along the lobes that are exposed, you can feel when the profile isn't what it is supposed to be, and there can be same sharp material on the edge of the lobe. The lobes can also develop some wear marks that look like streaking. I was surprised with mine, some of the lobes looked brand new, and others were in pretty rough shape.
