I have a VW Touareg 2016 with air suspension and towing single axle semi off road 17’ Avan Aspire 555 caravan. I am planning a trip from Sydney to Darwin and doing lots in the Northern Territory top end mainly on the tar but some on the dirt as well. I am looking to buy two spare full size 20 inch wheels, plus basket and some jerry cans for diesel. Just wondering if there’s any other VW spares that I should take considering the remote locations and availability of VW parts.

Spare Fuel filter & air filters
Probably get rid of the wheel security bolts and replace with std bolts
Consider removing the fuel filler restrictor so you can use high flow fuel bowsers
🤣 if you are going in the next few months you will need a good sense of humour and a lot of patience as the roads are trashed up north

Couple of additional things to consider.

Downsizing from 20's to 17's or 18's fitted with AT tyres, tyre plug kit, good tyre pressure gauge, tyre deflator. Would also ditch the OEM tyre "brace" and carry a 600 or 800mm breaker bar with appropriate sized deep socket to deal with any stubborn lug nuts.

Portable high capacity air compressor.

Decent Lithium jump starter.

Seeing you have air suspension a spare Pressure Retention Valve.

Spare fuel filter, consider fitting an additional fuel filter/water separator as discussed here....

Spare belts (serpentine and toothed) including tensioner.

You most probably will need to add engine oil during your trip so carry sufficient spare oil and coolant. Don't forget also to have a spare sump plug, just in case.

Don't forget to have various size pieces of luber;).

Hi Fellow Traveler, We completed an 8K trip in July last year from Qld to NT having concerns about a spare 20" wheel for our 2016 Touareg with air suspension. Our Highline van has two spare AT 16" wheels and I managed to buy a spare 20" Wolfsburg wheel and built a wheel carrier to fit the stud pattern, (see attached photos). The vehicle performed well with no issues pulling just over 3,100kg off road van. Ample fuel top ups available along main highways with an average of 18.6Lts per 100Km consumption. I personally don't favor roof racks on the vehicle due to the weight of the wheels, risk of injury, damage to the vehicle and increased weight changing the centre of gravity on the tow vehicle. Suggest contacting local wreckers for spare wheels for your vehicle.

Have the same spare setup on my camper. Works very well. Been reading this topic with interest. I would think that the spares list is such a personal thing. i.e. depending on your vehicles age and your own skills plus of course the available room and finally where you intend actually travelling.
The newer the vehicle the more difficult the list becomes.
As a general rule I would suggest:
Spare tyre for tower and towee plus all the gear (jacks, wheel nut spanner and breaker bar, jack plate etc etc) needed to change said tyre and better get rid of the locking wheel nuts too.
Spare fluids for top ups. Worst case you can use water for coolant but nothing replaces engine oil if needed. Don't forget steering and brake fluid.
Repair kits if you can use them, I carry a tyre repair kit, hose repair kits, electric and WD spray etc
After that, very first thing for vehicles in the last 20 years is GOOD diagnostic equipment and a charged laptop. If you are off the beaten track then a Sat phone to either arrange parts or a tow. Not quite the issue if you are highway travellers.
Spare belts are OK for some if you can change the belt without dismantling the car.
It was all so much easier back in the day............

Slightly off topic, what profile 20" Pirelli ATR tyres did you install?

I am currently ordering some and my options are:

265 50 20, ATR PLUS (more aggressive profile that I wasn't too keen on as standard ATR option is no longer available)
275 50 20 ATR MO. (expensive option but would be the best fit legally)
275 55 20 ATR (I think these will have rub issues and are slightly over size legally)

May I suggest you organise some sort of extra travel insurance to extend your coverage on the trip i.e. extending the "free tow" distance / emergency accommodation etc.

I only say this as a neighbour drove his new brand new Landcruiser up to the Kimberley somewhere and got a blocked injector in the middle of nowhere...cost him $5000+ for the recovery back to civilisation & extra accommodation waiting for parts etc

I would suggest that you weigh your vehicle once you have everything installed, including your tow. You'll be surprised how quickly you'll go over the vehicles maximum weight limits. You'll then need to take things out. :(

I'm having my rear seats removed to save weight.

Consider taking the tools required to effect changing any spare parts you bring.
Supply of Add-Blue if needed as you will burn it a lot faster hauling a caravan.
Note especially once you get the warning Add-Blue will be used a lot faster than the distance displayed

After doing multiple trips each in excess of 10,000km and carrying a multitude of spares and not needing anything at all, I am starting to think that good maintenance before the trip and a big credit card is all that may be needed next trip???
Big saving on weight and space or possibly tempting fate too much.

I agree. Help isn't far away these days for the average caravan adventurer.
That can be true, but with a Touareg, not necessarily so. Plus of course my latest with the DPF was really a drive it home outcome. The Newell has very little resources for non Toyota vehicles past Dubbo when heading north.
