Transmission servicing

I have been told that Touareg transmissions are sealed and do not require servicing. Is that cootect because common sense would dictate at least an oil and filter change.

When manufacturers say ‘sealed’ or ‘filled for life’ it normally means for the warranty period. You can service them, and they sell fluid and filter for them

Mentioning fuel filters, I've always wondered about this. I have no idea if the fuel filter on my V6 T2 was ever changed and it has over 240k KM. Should I run and get a new one and have it replaced (dumb question, I know) while I still can?

Yes, although because you have a petrol you don’t need to change as often as I said, more 30k km intervals seems reasonable

If you have a V10 good luck finding consumables, changed my trans fluid, shifting solenoids, and differential fluid at 150K (currently at 190K). Fluids only last a few years especially under high heat or heavy load. The only thing you'll need is a fluid pump to fill up the trans, I'm not sure if all the transmissions are the same way but I just filled it until fluid came out of the filler hole, started the car, and proceeded to add more while it was running and in gear. not sure if that was the proper procedure but that's how i've serviced dozens of transmissions. Shifted like garbage before, now it runs through the gears fine. Again not sure if the V6,V8, and V10 share the same transmission but in mine there was no filter just a fine mesh screen on the return side.

Isn't it amazing that someone who's such an expert on these things can crap all over an Aisin tranny that was used across such a wide range of high end makes\models, so successfully, for so many years? Imagine how many more vehicles VAG alone could've sold during that time if they had your knowledge and would've used a good tranny instead.

Notice how you barely ever even hear of a still driving make\model with that crappy tranny? o_O

Thanks for the transmission interval, I was just going to do mine every 80k km, didn’t know they had specific intervals for hot climates like Australia

I know that, although both continents vary from hot to cold depending on latitude - but the document above makes a specific recommendation for North America but none for the rest of the world, which includes Europe.

Transmission pan drop with replacement magnets and a fluid and filter 60-75k miles. Towing heavy trailers, maybe every 50k miles.

This issue is the drain and fill port and level check are all the same opening in the bottom of the AISIN transmission pan. There is no transmission dip stick. If you don't have a lift, it means jack stands all around to keep the Touareg level. I recommend having an indy shop do the work on a lift. The fluid is expensive and requires close to 8 quarts for a pan drop and drain. The entire system holds about 12 quarts. Getting it all changed is a lot of work.

My mechanic, who is mainly a transmission guy, always tells me that if I'm going to service the transmission than it should be done right, and not just a pan drop. What he means is getting all the fluid out of the transmission and oil cooler, flushing it to make sure no dirt or debris is lodged in there that can move and cause damage later on, especially with transmissions that have not been serviced regularly, and then do the oil and filter change.
