It's, love my R5 but occasionally- (like 3 times in the past two years) there is a solid clunk when it changes down to grab a gear after cruising along in top ie- on a long road in traffic that's moving around 60-80km per hour so you're slowing down and speeding up with the traffic flow. It's like the car gets stuck in 6th as you slow down then when you go to accelerate again - it suddenly realized its in the wrong gear and clunks into a lower gear. Normally it changes down gears as the speed slows.

Is this something I should be worried about?

Assuming it is an auto box it sounds like the very well known requirement for a replacement valve chest which is also referred to as a valve body.

Lots of threads on here about the problem which is usually a huge THUMP on a miss timed gear change from 5th to 4th on a light throttle at about 40 mph.

In the meantime do a gearbox reset. It won't fix the problem if it is the valve chest but it might help if it is not.

Ignition on but do NOT start the car.

Press the accelerator pedal firmly to the floor and hold it there for 10 seconds.

Release the pedal.

Turn the ignition off and remove the key.

Again this is a procedure all Touareg owners should know about and use from time to time.
