I am getting a malfunction message for the TPMS. The dealer says that they have been unable to locate the problem. They say that it is the control module or the sensors in the wheels. I suspect the sensors in the wheels because of the age of the car, and I read someplace that the batteries on the sensors die after some years.

Any ideas on how to check this and fix it?

Thanks.

VAG Com and VCDS software. Once you have this go to the DIY part of the forum and read the directions in how to turn the system off.

The TPMS sensors last for around six years. This is the reason that VW says for their replacement after 6 years. You can delete the TPMS function via the VAG-COM or you can buy 4 new sensors. For an unknown to me reason (probably for safety and accuracy reasons) is not possible a replacement of the TPMS battery and this is the reason of the expiry date. I know that there are also aftermarket sensors that are compatible with the car. Tirerack I think can provide some more information about aftermarket TPMS sensors.

The VW dealer and any tire dealer will have a TPMS tool that will read if the sensor is broadcasting a proper signal. They can check each wheel to see if all sensors are dead or not; if they are all broadcasting then you can look for another problem...as you state, it is very likely just needing new sensors with the new batteries built inside.

If you need new tires it is the best time to bite the bullet and replace the sensors as the tires will already be dismounted and you can save much of the labor.
