Hello,

I will be relocating for about 870 miles. I am considering renting a UHaul truck and towing my 2005 Touareg V8 behind it. I am facing couple issues.

1. On UHaul's site, it shows that towing does not accommodate any vehicles that are heavier then 5280 pounds. The 2005 Touareg V8's curb weight is 5300 pounds. Do you think that it is still doable?

2. I never towed a car before. I will appreciate if anybody can provide some tips and advice.

Just FYI: I do not wish to drive the car, fly back and drive a truck again. I prefer not to use a towing company as I have never shipped a car with a towing company before. I do not have anybody else who can drive my car behind the truck. I talked to another moving company called Penske and they told me that my car is simply to heavy.

I babied this car since I purchased it brand new in 2005.

Thanks in advance.

UHaul has other services where they provide a container and you pack it and they pick it up for you and haul it. Then you just drive.

Might be a better option if you're new to towing stuff.

Hopefully you realize that the Touareg will require a car hauler and not a car dolly if you plan to hitch it to a moving truck.

The car haulers are a couple hundred bucks - are those weight limited to 5300 pounds? I bet if you factored that into the math, have them haul your self packed UShip container and simply drive - and meet your stuff there - makes better math sense.

Thanks. Yes, I am aware that I need a hauler and not a dolly. I would rather not drive my car. That is the whole reason behind this. I'd rather pay a few hundred bucks then put another 870 miles on the car. My car has 27823 miles.

Perhaps, the weight is a combined with the haurler. That might be the issue.

I will talk to them. Thanks again.

A flatbed style car hauler alone is about 1500-2000 pounds, PLUS the weight of the Touareg will easily exceed the 5300 U-Haul vehicle tow limit.

The Touareg , because of the AWD system, cannot be towed with any tires on the road, unless the Touareg rear driveshaft is disconnected, then the front tires can be put on a dolly style towing device, and the rear tires left on the ground.

Maybe U-Haul has a bigger truck that can handle the load?

It'll cost more than a couple hundred bucks (rental/one-way up charge/per mile charges)...and if your over the weight limit other unintended outcomes could occur.

Have you replaced the timing belt, tensioners, thermostat and water pump yet?

I have to check my records. I took it in for a service right before my 870 mile trip in April 2014. The bill was over $1600. I don't remember what exactly they did. I am on my 4th battery though, which sucks big time.

Also, this brake assist workshop light came out 2 days ago.

While leaving the gym, I scratched something underneath the car on the right hand side. I don't know what I scratched but I am wondering whether it might be related. There is no visual damage. I thought I scratched the wheel but that wasn't it.

It took me 11.5 hours of driving for 870 miles including 4 pit stops for fueling. It was boring as hell.

I will stop by a local UHaul and post here what they say about towing the car.

thanks

Others will know better but you may have dislodged your ABS sensor. For one or two folk on here that means nothing more than getting it put back into place.

Do check up on the timing belt. It is now well overdue on time and the engine is toast if it lets go.
