I had a 2004 with air suspension, I especially liked the sport v. the comfort setting to change for on and off highway use. I am looking at a 2004 without the air suspension.

Is there a big difference in not having the air suspension? Such as performance, handling, or how about any non-hardcore off roading.

How about towing (around 5,000 pounds)

Thanks

They are all rated to tow the same amount, reguardless of suspension or motor. So that is not an issue. It will obviously not have the load leveling like the air does, so you may get some sag. I think the non air car handles just fine and have no issues with it. Yes, it would be nice to have the air for offroad but it is still very capable offroad as well.

I had one with air suspension and now have one without. It is nice to be able to change the settings of the stiffness of the shocks. I have towed my wakeboard boat with both and the steel suspension tows it fine. The only thing that the air suspension really is good for is clearance.

the aussie off road journalists say the spring egg is the way to go, more compliant ride on the rough roads and better suited to the tough stuff despite ground clearance less over air

I had the choice of air or no air and chose steel.
Reliability. Air suspension might work well, but if it doesn't it'll bring you down.
And bring you down in a bad way. I've heard of Discovery drivers force to drive home on the bumpers due to failed air suspension.
A friend with an older model range rover paid to have the air suspension removed.
Not a Touareg of course.

If all the folks with air suspension say it's trouble free, then it's a great technology. Get it. If you have to make a safe choice. without a lot of information, it's just one more thing to go wrong.

I've had both steel and air and prefer the air.I have had issues with the air but I still prefer the air suspension

Everything on a car will fail eventually. I wouldn't be without a/c or power steering. The air really makes the Touareg special. I'm on my second with air and wouldn't have any other way. It climbs off the road and lowers to get my mother-in law onboard.

I actually sought out a non air touareg. Of course my Idea of off road is a gravel parking lot or a drive on the beach;) I always intended on changing out the springs with an aftermarket set to get a little better stance with the larger wheels. I think the air is a sweet option, but having come from a rover I just didn't want to risk the bag failure (I know a Treg is NOT a rover and that germans build a better... blah blah blah)

Either way you will have one of the nicest SUV's on the planet!
