Like a 1998 - 2002
What year Treg are you looking at. My wife had a 2001 ML 320, we now have a 2006 Treg and it gives the ML a run for its money. To be honest, the Treg is more fun to drive. However, If it is down between a 1998-2002 ML and a 2004 Treg I would go for the ML.

Be very careful with 2001 and below ML's there are quite a few issues (like early 2004 Touaregs) that need to be and are still being worked out. I previously had a 1999 ML430 that was a bucket. Maintenance wise it would be cheaper then the treg but intervals would be roughly the same. Power would be substantially less then the treg as well as the road presence. Personally, I would never purchase another ML, or Treg for that matter. That is just my personal preference, but if I had to choose I would choose the Treg. The only thing I would say the ML has going for it is ride comfort, my old ML was very solid, no rattles and random crap moving/making noise inside. This however is compared to a steel suspension treg, not air.

I see here on car point it shows a moderate problem.
"An occasional problem on this vehicle is the failure of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor. Problems with the MAF Sensor can cause the Check Engine Light to illuminate. The cost to repair the MAF Sensor is estimated at $298 for parts and $32.50 for labor. All prices are estimates based on $65 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax."

Just my two cents before I inked the deal on my '04 Touareg I was eyeing a 2003 ML 350 inspiration edition. If you are going for an ML go for '03 and up model the price is not as high as you might and expect and the rear A/C controls in the '03 is just another toy for back seat riders to play with. The 232hp 3.7 is what you need.

Come on.... for some of us minions that have just found technology this decade.......

I am (was!) seriously looking at a ML430 2000 model as a second car here in NSW because can't find another V10 for sale .......... oh and the $30,000 difference in price!!......

Guess should stop looking down that road then eh?!?
