Hello All,

Have been on the hunt for a V10tdi, however I read a lot about them and got scared a bit to be honest. I have read that for most of the time you need to take out the engine.... is this true? can someone list me what needs to go wrong to take out the engine? turbos? pumps? starter? ... and is it easier to take out the front or bodywork and not remove the engine?

Found one with 100,000 km from 2004....is this the sort of mileage when everything will start to go wrong??

Appreciate any help

Thank you.

Buying a used Touareg. What to look for. - myTreg forums

The V10 is a supercar engine and can be expensive to fix if it goes wrong.

You are looking at a 14 year old car.

All Touaregs can be expensive to fix anyway, and the older they get, the more likely they are to break down and, unfortunately, the bills don't get cheaper!

The V10 engine is very complex and very rare, and for some repairs, yes, it has to come out, so is there anyone on Malta actually capable of fixing it?

And don't assume that a VW dealer can!

So if you can afford the big bills if something goes wrong and can still smile as you drive away from the repair shop having paid out a couple of thousand euros or more, go ahead.

I nearly forgot but I think your year engine requires fresh Eolys fluid for the emissions system every 5 years or 100,000 miles whichever comes first.

Somehow I doubt your car has had this replaced so it may well need 5 litres of fresh fluid.

It's about 100 Euros a litre.

ohh boy....sounds like I would be getting a second wife :) I don't have such deep pockets to keep it running, if it goes wrong. I mean i can afford a couple of k's to repair once, but if it is frequent....i would be facing a divorce....

Pity, I was always in love with them, but ..... would a V6 tdi be as costly to keep as well?

Thank you

All Touaregs can be expensive to fix if something goes wrong. There weren't cheap to fix when new and now they are ageing they may go wrong more often.

If you don't have good mechanical skills yourself and need to rely on a garage then there aren't many people who really know these cars like they might a Passat or a Golf for example.

I have three of them. Love them! Don’t listen to people unless they are coming from a position of ownership. Lot of bad information out there! Buy one (or more, a few of us on here have two or more) and enjoy it!
Thank you. That is what my heart tells me....but when i see all these repair bills, i kinda think twice about it. I mean i can do some DIY, but of course i cannot take the engine out, i dont have the tools.

The guy has written that he has limited funds.

With 3 V10s you clearly don't have that issue!

Buying a 14 year old Touareg, regardless of whether its a V10, a V6 or a 2.5, is a risk.

Malta is a comparatively small island where the mechanical understanding of a Touareg might be a challenge for most mechanics there.

There are a couple of good specialists on VWs...but the charge rate is not cheap.
Which brings me back to the point I was making in an earlier post - like VW specialists in most place these guys will know the smaller, mass produced, Passats, Golfs and Polos inside out but the Touareg . . .?

Not so likely.

And the V10? . . . even less so unless one of the owners runs one himself!

Before throwing in the towel why not ask around and see if any of the mechanics there can work on them? Honestly, if the mechanic is good enough and understands engines well, this one is not something insanely different from any other engine like a V8. I would ask around and interview some mechanics. I mean how many miles can you get on the thing driving around Malta? ;) I suggest finding the best specimen you can, find one that has had all the work done already. If you are able to get an extended warranty there, get one. Extended Warranties for New and Used Cars in Europe

Don't be too scared of this car. Buy one. There will be issues, any 14 year old car will have issues, even a toyota will (though less expensive to fix but, less fun to drive too).

Worse case scenario you can sell it if you cannot deal with it. I doubt it will come to that if you choose the right one. I would find a one owner, lots of records, recent work done and move on. Buy one on the mainland and have it looked over by a competent mechanic who can also scan it too. This is a special car but not the most special that you should stay away from it.

Hello,

Yes i know what you mean, but sometimes reading makes you feel as if I am buying a Bugatti :) I asked my primary mech and he never worked on any of them, I will go to my secondary one....discuss a bit with him. Not much V10 here on the island...I know of 4, one was up for sale 2 years ago and I missed it...did not have the cash to buy it...was a one owner....now I found this one, a two owner, 100,000km on the clock, did not go and see it yet. He is asking Euro 19K which I think is not worth as much after 14yrs..right? What sort of price are they worth in mint condition?

Many thanks

Ask the owners where they take theirs too. Two owner is fine too, 100K km is nothing. 19K Euro is about right. Good ones with low mileage in US go between 15-25K USD. Depends on condition and work done. Price is always not firm on cars, I am sure if you came with 15K in pocket he would take it. ;)

I almost bought one 2 years ago for $24K USD. Low mileage 2008 model with a bunch of work already done and one owner.

I have a 2010 TDI instead for 24K USD. I am happy with it but still crave a V10. I was thinking of trading in with this VW settlement and buying a V10. But for now I keep the 10' since it is such a stellar car.

Do you guys have Bio-diesel there? If so run it in that thing if you get one. It will be even more amazing.

Don't be shy it will cost money but it will not kill you unless the v10's previous owner left a bunch of things for you to fix instead!

Looks nice but that can be deceiving! Mint means nothing if their are issues. If you are interested, pay a mechanic to look it over and scan it, get records on it and so forth. 694 miles in it, wow! 19k Euro is CHEAP! Something must be wrong with it. ;) He may know of something seriously wrong so be careful. For the record, I have owned one. Don't be freaked make sure to have some funds available for working on it and try to buy an extended warranty.

Hello Blownvette,

from the 3 you have, how many miles did you do on each and how many times did you have to take out the engine? and for what reasons?

Thanks.
