Touareg Ownership Reviews? (2011+ TDI)

Hey gang,

My mom has got a very low mileage 2016 3.6 V6 gas and I love how the thing rides. Handles great, smooth, very nice inside, love the car.

I have convinced my wife that we should replace our CX-5 with a Touareg TDI as they come with some dieselgate warranty and I love that 3.0 V6 TDI.

I would likely be looking for a 2013+ with the power increase but am looking to get more in depth reviews rather than all the google searches and general owner reviews.

My biggest concern right now is the panoramic sunroof leaking - how often does this happen and is this something as terrible to fix as it sounds? (Headliner, sunroof frame out, total reseal, thousands of dollars later, etc?) has anyone attempted to seal it possibly with a clear vinyl wrap done professionally?

Any other glaring issues known? Does the Porsche or Audi line up suffer from the sunroof failures?

The drivetrain seems fantastic and I would likely be going with a stage 2 tune and delete down the road, likely Malone as his company is very close to my house.

Thank you for taking the time to chime in, I know these questions may be somewhat elementary but I’m really looking to hear de passionate Touareg owners as this would ideally be something we keep long term and rack up the mileage on.

Thank you for the reply. I was a bit disappointed after digging deeper into the sunroof issue, I do realize it could be something that the more you dive into it, the more you think it’s a big issue when in fact it’s likely effecting a small amount of vehicle. The Touareg will still be our next vehicle and I’m quite excited to start the search!

We have owned our 2016 VW Touareg TDI Exec since DEC 2017. (We are the original owners as the vehicle sat on the local dealer’s lot waiting for the ‘fix’ before it could be sold.) Other than normal maintenance (cleaning and lubrication), performed once a year, we have had no other problems with the sunroof.

The sunroof will make both ‘groaning’ and ‘squeaking’ sounds when opening or closing, clearing indicating the need for maintenance. When the cleaning and lubrication is completed, the sunroof opens and closes without issue.

Also, we make sure to keep the sunroof closed when parked under trees which are dropping their leaves, or when parked in (or driving through) areas which are very dusty or otherwise have lots of debris in the air. This minimizes the amount of dirt and debris which can contaminate the sunroof tracks and drain tubes.

While I am certainly no expert on sunroofs, I have not heard of recurring issues with Touareg sunroofs. For us, the panoramic sunroof is a wonderful addition to the vehicle and well worth the minimal maintenance required to keep it operational.

Thank you, Marty. I really appreciate you (and all others) for taking the time to reply. My mom hasn’t had any issues with hers but she only has 20,000kms on it and it stays in their garage. I love the panoramic roofs and we currently have one in our F-150 (that fortunately hasn’t leaked yet). It really is a beautiful feature to have. I will plan to do regular maintenance on it and have watched some videos on how to clear out the drains which seems pretty straight forward.

Happy driving and stay safe!

IMO, most people who have sunroof and related drain issues, spent a lot of time with their roofs open and never clean the area\drains\etc. Like others have mentioned, regular upkeep should be sufficient to avoid any issues.

I have a '14 so I would not hesitate to approve your choice of getting a fixed '13+. I would also strongly suggest you resist the urge to mod it until the extended warranty runs out.

They're good cars. Lots of threads on them. Sunroof issues are prevalent in ANY car with a sunroof. Keep it clean and maintained.

I've had at least one for the last 20+ years and I'll probably be buried in my cabrio. The thing is I now wrestle with whether to take it out or drive the TDi. Problems problems lol
