I know this doesn't belong here... but nobody's listening in "Anything "Automotive".

VW has a factory team entered in the Dakar Rally. This is a 16 day event running over open roads and dessert. Robby Gordon (yes the same Robby who drives NASCAR, IRL and Baja) is the only US driver on the Factory VW Team sponsored by Red Bull.

In my day job I work closely with Robby and his organization. I got the lowdown on the T-Reg he's peddling thru the sand. It is a tube frame purpose built race truck with a twin turbo 5 cylinder diesel. The gearbox is a paddle shift sequential setup with auto downshift and up shift. The body is carbon fiber and bonded to the space frame. It weighs about 3000lbs. Light by SUV standards. The build cost was over $2 million for the 4 trucks entered by VW!

A highlights show will be produced and shown on OLN early next year. Here are the websites again:

http://www.touareg-dakar.com

The 2005 dates and route:

http://www.eurosport.com/home/pages/V4/L2/S239/E6746/sport_Lng2_Spo239_Evt6746_Sto640708.shtml

Robby promised me pictures of the event when he gets back. I will create a gallery here for all so see.

Show your support and GO TOUAREG!!!!!!!

Why don't you suggest that Robby join ClubTouareg? It would be cool to have a star, professional Touareg driver in the mix here.

It would really be cool if he put a ClubTouareg sticker on his car for the race!

#3 ·
I'll get coverage and updates from him. VW controls the sponosrship of the car, which is Red Bull. Robby was invited to drive because of his relationshiop in off-road racing with that brand. As you can see VW corporate has it's own web-based initiative. Maybe for 2006!

#4 ·
Yeah, of course I know VW controls the sponsorship. I just think it would be really cool if they supported thier enthusiast owners with a little recognition. Wouldn't cost them hardly anything, I would think.

I know, pipe dream, but wouldn't it be cool?

Tell Robby we're pulling for him!

I'm big fan of motorsports... I watched the T-regs last year. It would be sweet to have some "Race Touareg" parts available. A few Dakar mods will probably grace the wife's T-reg sooooon. I also plan to make a sticker from my avatar if anyone is interested?

Team Treg and Robby

I've been following Robby since his early days in Mexico. If this race will be anything like the one's in Baja, it will be most exciting. He brings a whole new dimension to the sport. From the words of the famous Indy driver Scott Sharp, " He's crazy in that truck of his and I won't be getting back into it with him anytime soon". :censored:

I was with Robby this week and he's thrilled that we are behind his effort for Dakar.

His PR Manager will be feeding me updates, photos and providing me quotes from Robby via satelite phone. I'll put up as much as I can. Robby is also taking his own digital camera, so hopefully we'l have some shots from behind the wheel.

Here are the pics from the German Motorshow, at the announcent of the 2005 Dakar T-reg that I recieved this week.

The race begins New Years Eve... Stay Tuned!

What it takes...

VW's undertaking of the Dakar Rally is enormous. To give you and idea, the four race Touaregs are supported by:

2 4Wheel Drive Race Trucks each with a 6 man crew
9 Service Touaregs
4 6Wheel Drive Full size Support Trucks
3 8Wheel Drive Support Truck
46 technicians

Robby told me that VW enters the two Full Size Trucks to follow the four race Touaregs so if they have a problem, they are right behind them to fix it. The remaining trucks move from checkpoint to checkpoint to service the race Touaregs.

It is a $20 million dollar undertaking.

Here is the Team pre-race.

Touareg and Robby Gordon Win Stage 1!

Dakar Rally, leg 1, 31st December 2004

The Touareg Team is off to a great start! Robby is in the overall lead with teammates in 4th, 6th and 13th. Below are some quotes from the VW-Motorsports team.

Stage win for Volkswagen debutant Robby Gordon
Wolfsburg (31st December 2004)
New Year cracker lit by Volkswagen newcomer Robby
Gordon during the Dakar Rally: The US-American won the opening six kilometer stage of the desert classic, which was held on the beach at Castelldefels 20 kilometers south of Barcelona, in the Volkswagen Race-Touareg. For the Race-Touareg, which celebrated its premiere exactly one year ago, success in the curtain-raiser meant the eighth stage victory in total. Robby Gordon’s team colleagues also successfully mastered the beach stage: The Frenchman Bruno Saby occupied fourth place on the first stage, Jutta Kleinschmidt from Germany was sixth and the Finn Juha Kankkunen came home in 13th position.

Kris Nissen (Volkswagen Motorsport Director)“Congratulations to Robby Gordon and Dirk von Zitzewitz on their successful start! I watched the first stage from the beach and noticed just how nimble the Race-Touareg was in deep sand and also over the jumps. No matter how fantastic today’s victory is, it nevertheless says so little about the real competitiveness. Despite this success, we are not among the list of favorites for overall victory.”

#317 – Robby Gordon (USA), 1st place (leg) / 1st position overall“A perfect debut! Obviously, to win my first ‘Dakar’ stage straightaway is fantastic. With the Race-Touareg, Volkswagen gave me an excellent and very easy car to drive, with which my co-driver Dirk and I could fly effortlessly over the jumps. I’m looking forward to the forthcoming stages.”

#307 – Bruno Saby (F), 4th place (leg) / 4th position overall“There is a fantastic atmosphere here in Barcelona. The beach stage is obviously completely different to all the other stages that await us. My result is absolutely okay, as had to back-off once to avoid the Philippe Gache’s stationary car.”

#310 – Jutta Kleinschmidt (D), 6th place (leg) / 6th position overall“The fans were given an incredible spectacle with the most amazing motorbike jumps. The artificial jumps were very steep for the cars, that’s why we didn’t risk anything and are therefore satisfied with sixth position.”

#313 – Juha Kankkunen (FIN), 13th place (leg) / 13th position overall“The first six kilometers went according to plan. I took things very gently along this pure spectator stage. The Race-Touareg ran perfectly and I’m already really looking forward to the stages in Africa.”

Standings after stage 1, Barcelona (ES) – Barcelona (ES); 6/50 km stage/total
Pos. Team Vehicle Stage 1 Total time
1. Robby Gordon/Dirk von Zitzewitz (USA/D) Volkswagen Race-Touareg 4.20 min. (1.) 4.20 min.

The Volkswagen works team will greet 2005 altogether at a New Year’s party. The 62 member team will celebrate New Year’s Eve at the team hotel in Barcelona. There will not be a wild party.

The first service vehicles head towards Granada early tomorrow morning, where the second stage will take place on 2nd January.

Thanks for the updates, bbarr. Great pics too.

I'm hoping to see some action shots somewhere soon - as soon as they get them posted somewhere.

Wooo-Hoo Robby!

Also, what size BF Goodrich All Terrains are they running on the support Touaregs? They look like 17" rims.

To All:

I will do my best to get all your questions answered.

I believe the entire fleet is diesel. That is the most commonly available fuel and to have the race trucks and support trucks run the same fuel simplifies things.

On the BFG tire question, I’ll see what I can find.

My goal is post Robby and the Team results daily. My source for information and photos is VW’s Motorsports Race Department encrypted website and Robby’s PR Manager.

Robby should be sending his photos from the cockpit soon.

Thanks to everyone for your support. I will let Robby know we are pulling for him!

Details from the factory

VW's Motorpsort Relations Department was kind enough to provide me with the following information about the effort.

This is impressive!

Dakar Rally: Departure from Wolfsburg

With 21 vehicles and 62 people en route to Dakar
The Volkswagen works team, consisting of 21 vehicles and 62 people, left the Autostadt on Monday and set course for Barcelona, the starting point for the Dakar Rally. While the works drivers Robby Gordon, Juha Kankkunen, Jutta Kleinschmidt and Bruno Saby together with their co-drivers Dirk von Zitzewitz, Juha Repo, Fabrizia Pons and Michel Périn completed a question and answer session for numerous media representatives and fans and signed hundreds of autographs, the impressive convoy of competition and service vehicles prepared for the journey to Barcelona, where the world famous desert rally will start at New Year after two days of scrutineering. In addition to the driving and navigational expertise, logistics are a third important element of the competition that finishes on 16th January in the Senegalese capital city. As a result, the smallest of spare parts, the tires, mechanics and team boss, all the material and every person must be transported more than 10,000 kilometers; every formality must be observed and a strict time schedule followed.

Superb logistical feat with advance planning
The planning and coordination of this extensive supply chain, moving over two continents for more than a fortnight, is the domain of an extremely experienced Volkswagen employee: Paco Crous, involved in motorsport since 1962, experienced his first Dakar Rally in 1983. Incredibly, the Catalonian will participate in the Desert Classic for the 18th time in January 2005. Together with other team personnel, the 59-year old Spaniard plans the deployment of more than 60 personnel for the second Dakar Rally appearance of the Race-Touareg. “Together with Team Manager Peter Utoft, a team diagram is drawn up, explains Paco Crous. “The travel itineraries, flight and hotel bookings, time schedules, loading plans and other pertinent instructions are derived from this, all of which is summarized in a handbook for each employee.”
Apparent trivialities such as the transport within Europe gains importance: How do the employees, whose vehicles have to be available for technical scrutineering, get to and from the hotel and rally centre in Barcelona without their fleet? How and when will which material be transported by the European Support Team from Germany to Spain?

Responsibility for all vehicle categories
A total of 21 vehicles from Volkswagen will start as authorized participants in the competition and service-vehicle categories of the Dakar Rally. In addition to the four Race-Touareg vehicles for the works drivers, nine production based Service-Touareg cars, one twin-axle, four three-axle and a single four-axle truck of varying construction are also included in the fleet. Two trucks are also entered in the truck category, which can provide direct help on the stages. These “knights in shining armour” require the same level of meticulous preparation as the four Race-Touareg cars, as they are nevertheless race vehicles as defined in the rally’s T4-Regulations, which follow exactly the same route as the cars and motorcycles. Klaus Leihener is responsible for the preparation and race logistics of all trucks and again drives one of the two Race-Trucks.

The transport boxes, each tailored individually to suit Volkswagen’s requirements, are loaded according to detailed equipment plans. The freight for the Race-Touareg comprises of no less than 360 pre-mounted wheels and tires, 32 complete suspension units, 60 driveshafts, 16 propshafts, eight front and eight rear differentials and seven gearboxes. Every Service-Truck is stocked with at least 5,000 individual components. As the Race-Trucks must successfully master all the dune and pass crossings and, in the worst case, tow one of the four works drivers’ competition cars to the finish if defect, the payload of the twin-axle trucks must not be completely exceeded. Therefore, a Race-Truck only contains about 1.4 tons of the most important materials required for mechanical ‘first aid’. Fresh supplies are taken from the Service-Trucks at the bivouac in the evening. Volkswagen has ordered 25,000 liters of fuel from the organizer for the entire caravan, which consists solely of diesel powered four-wheel drive vehicles.

The nine Service-Touareg vehicles, specially built to transport the technicians, mechanics, and other personnel, benefit directly from the impressive basis concept of Volkswagen’s premium segment all-terrain vehicle. Based on the top-of-the-range V10 TDI, a team, lead today by Christoph Beck, had already developed a three or four-seat escort vehicle for the two ‘Dakar’ events in 2003 and 2004, which in addition to being equipped with a roll-cage, race seats, two spare-wheels, an extra fuel tank and water tank also has a roof mounted box.

Planning for the unpredictable
In addition to these 21 vehicles, two extra four-axle trucks of a sub-contractor are on stand-by for the transport of tires, wheel rims and other large components. Additional vehicles – for instance at the start in Barcelona or in and around the bivouacs in Africa – are provided by the local Volkswagen dealer network. “Today we have the plannable art of the event behind us”, knows Paco Crous. “The critical phase begins after that, which is characterized by unexpected developments, quick decisions and improvisation. This is exactly what makes the Dakar Rally so appealing.”

BHBARR.....Thanks for the updates/info. Keep them coming. I can't wait until SPEED channel broadcasts the rallye.
It's not on SPEED this year. It's on Outdoor Life Network, and there is no live, or even same-day coverage. The actual race broadcasts won't start until Jan 22. :(

Beginning in 2005, Outdoor Life Network will televise the world-famous Dakar Rally as part of a multi-year agreement. The race, the world’s toughest motoring rally, is celebrating its 27th run in 2005. OLN® will air five and a half hours of coverage beginning Jan. 23rd at 9:30 PM ET/PT (from Jan. 24-27 coverage will begin at 10:00 PM ET/PT). OLN will also air a pre-race show entitled Dakar US Rider Search, which will air in December, prior to the event.
