Anybody interested in this kind of unit.
Some chinese companies are making them for other models. I sent some inquiries about the possibility of making one for the touareg mk1. The center console is a good condidate on the mk1 for this kind of unit. This will get rid of all the buttons ans leave with a tesla style screen :grin2:

If you're interested please chime in. This will give the android unit manufacturers I'm contacting some encouragement as for now they are only making units to replace the vw unit.
If they show no interest I might start a project to make one myself :) The part that I'm not confortable with is the AC controls/heated seats/parktronic integration into android or windows. This might require quite a bit of work to hack.

I'd be interested in this IF it can be made to work seamlessly. I kinda like the latitude / longitude / compass / height etc display, would be sad to lose that. Would be a real bonus if they could make it integrate properly with the MFD.

I finally found the perfect fit unit. Well that's too early to say though. I just ordered this 4GB Ram big screen android unit. 285$ delivered from aliexpress. I don't expect it to work flawlessly with the multifunction steering wheel but I don't really use the wheel buttons a lot. They say it's 2003 to 2010. T1 (2002 to 2007) does not use the same obd protocol as T2 (2007-2010) so I hope they have different can translators/controllers and are not just mixing things up.

Unit installed. Happy so far. Gives the Treg a modern look and is of course more versatile than the original navigation 2 system. More on the setup later. Here is a teaser pic. I now have zero peeling buttons on the central console. The unit replaces the big buttons above the AC control module. I did replace the AC control module with a newer 2010 version. I’m even impressed the heated seats buttons work and have leds to show heating level instead of number on the old big buttons.

Device has a wifi card. You can either use your phone as a hotspot or add a 4g modem. I will be adding a modem later. For the moment I use my phone.
I will be adding an obd bluetooth adaptor to have some gauges and do some quick checks. Waze works fine for navigation.

I will upload this weekend.
Unit is decent. I don’t use the Treg a lot though. Was very easy to install. Had a big fright when there was no sound coming out of the speakers but managed to solve it.
