Gas Mileage of 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

As a newbie I know I'm taking a chance posting this link without doing a search. Just some interesting government factoids on the T-reg fuel consumption, etc. Seems to be pretty accurate as far as my limited experience with my '05 V8.

Maybe I am doing something wrong but I drive 28 miles to work @ 55 MPH and when I get home I check the MFI screen I almost always get an avg. of 21 mpg. As I am driving it always goes from 19 to 23 the whole ride home. I am not sure how accurate the readings are but I think that is pretty damn good!!!

On that web page, there is a line toward the bottom:
Gas Guzzler ...................................................No

I know this is for tax classification purposes, but I still find it funny. My V8 loves some gas. I couldn't get much better than 15mpg city/18mpg hwy so I quit trying to squeeze better mileage out of the Treg. It is a lot more fun to drive with a lead foot.:D

My V8 chews fuel like an addict...

In 'Since Start" mode driving home 13 miles I'm looking at about 12 in very heavy traffic 13.9 if I'm lucky

Highway can creep to 18 on flat, maybe 20 slightly down hill!

My instant consumption on downshifts at 90 mph up steep hills on freeways will drop to 6mpg...

I never bought it thinking it'd be 3 cylinder diesel though!

what are you guys talking about??????

Once, when decellerating into an off ramp, with MFI reading current MPG, I got 138 mpg..

This car gets great mileage...might only last for a nanosecond, but such fuel economy is available from the Touareg.

Then, when the bride fires it up for her six mile city commute on a winter's day I figure about 12 mpg. I get probably 17 on the highway ~70 - 75mph.

These numbers sound right

138 only? - pah - I get --- which as far as I'm concerned mean I never need to fill it up again!

put it on instant and when you're coasting down hill the figure will rocket until the engine comes under load again...

"put it on instant and when you're coasting down hill the figure will rocket until the engine comes under load again..."

I'm referring to the folks that say they are getting 17-21 MPG.

I've never seen it - 18 once coming downhill from payson to Phoenix, mirrors folded in with a tail wind! (joke about the mirrors) ;)

I've gotten 18-19 doing 80-85 on a flat run to Vegas with cruise control on. Definitely drops big time once you start pushing 90+.

18-19mpg @ 80-85MPH. That what I drive at when I go back home up to Stockton on I-5 and my trip computer averages 13.5 every time.

I am talking a flat run with cruise control. But even without the cruise on I can get 15-17 going down to San Diego @ same speed. I do see 12-13 on slight inclines and hills.

Sorry to rub it in but during this past weekend I was getting 28 mpg doing 60 to 80 mph over 100 mile road trip, with quite a few stop/go through small towns and traffic with a 2.5L R5 . I'm hoping to improve this once it is broken in. Not that diesel is expensive here - $3/gal.

Fuel Econonmy

Just as a point of reference, a V10 TDI with twice the number of cylinders of an R5 TDI will obtain 24-27mpg (US) depending on highway speed.
26-27mpg (US) at 65mph on cruise is common.
24-25mpg at 75-80mph.
Not sure if you are using Imperial gallons versus US gallons in the R5 mileage numbers.
Diesel in the US is US$3.35 to 3.65 per US gallon.

Yeah, that's what I don't get....Twice the size yet not twice as bad fuel economy. I would have loved to get the V10 but the $110K US price tag was a little steep - used 2 -3 year old are going for $70k US. Oh well, maybe when I get back to the States...

Those were US gallons but my truck has only about 1000 miles on it. So I'm hoping that the mileage will increase as it gets broken in. Also I never used the cruise control because of traffic and such so there was constant speeding up and slowing down. But I think highway milaege in the 30's is possible. we'll see....

Here in my town we have Ethanol added to the fuel from November through February. And we all know how that affects economy. That being said the last tank I tallied using actual miles and gallons (not the MFI, it's very 'optomistic') I got 13.8 mpg doing mostly in town driving. I might hop on the freeway for five or six miles, but then it's back off to the city streets. And when I drive I like the sweet sound that V8 makes. Which means the foot sometimes has lead in it. The last time I actually drove on the highway for a decent drive of over 120 miles I averaged 17 mpg. But I drove half of that distance at ahem, let's just say well above 80mph and the return trip was 75-80mph. So once we get out of Ethanol land I might do another check. But like someone previously said, we didn't buy our cars for the mileage! Drive On! :joy:
