Hey everyone,

Ive owned the treg for a few years but I am new to the sight. Recently I had the passenger side headlight go dead. and then the dash lit up with almost every light imaginable. I changed the headlight unit, ballast and all, but its still dead. The car works but occasionally will throw random lights but then go off. Does anyone have any idea what could have happened? below is the VCDS auto scan of the faults found:

The car was in the shop recently and they put a new battery in. The car worked fine for a few hours of driving and then started to act up again. Is it possible that the battery was bad that was put in or could it be an alternator issue?

Check voltage at aux posts under hood. Charged battery should read about 12.3v. If you can get it running, check voltage on cluster gauge. Should be right around 14v. If way high(less likely) or low and only reading battery voltage(which will drop), your alternator is not up to par. I think by 05, the faulty alternator cable issue was fixed, so I would guess alternator issue and not cable.

It might actually only be the voltage regulator, which can be replaced separately. The brushes wear down and eventually fail. The A student would have soldered in new brushes before they got to 5mm long, but much easier to just swap in a new regulator. Not that it's easy to pull the alternator in a V8...it's close to a nightmare.

yes, good info on driver kick panel harness

I expect to be due for that soon, from phantom leak that comes down a-pillar.

Final Update. It was indeed the splices in the wiring bundle. It's kind of shocking really. Here is this massive bundle of wires that I can only believe is basically the backbone of the car, and it's got 3 crappy splices in it. Splices that are held together with tape.

The three splices were:
4 heavy gauge black wires (maybe 8 or 10 gauge)
2 super skinny black wires (maybe 24 gauge)
2 super skinny brown wires w a red stripe (again about 24 gauge)

I cut all the wires about 6 inches back and respliced them. The black ones were a PITA because of the gauge. I almost used a crimp cap or twist cap on them. I ended up using a little solder.

Be mindful - you assume all risk should you do this to your vehicle (and not me). I had my battery disconnected so I didn't make my problems any worse. Plus, sometimes black is the powered wire, and there's a lot of amperage in a car battery.

I'm 99% confident that the issue was the brown wire. It literally fell apart in my hands. You can see in the picture the green in the tape - that's corrosion leaking out of the skinny black one. I hope that this can help someone else in the same position I was. I'm also glad that it was a relatively quick and easy fix - the diagnosis took the longest.
That is such a great writeup and with good pictures to boot. Thank You a hundred times.

I pulled the battery and charged it and tested it. the battery is brand new and tests good. I looked through the wiring harness under the drivers feet and found the splices but they are all intact and are making a connection. My ground from the battery is good and all fuses are good. The battery however will die if left connected if the car is just sitting. So I know I must have a short someone. Is there any common place to look for a short in the wiring harness. Also the car is blowing the fuse to the passenger side low beam HID. Thanks for any help in advance.

The insulation on the wiring inside the headlights gets brittle and falls off leaving exposed wires. It's a known problem and may be the cause of the blowing fuse. Check it out ASAP would be my advice.

Oh crap! This one is starting to be a real pain...

Can you clear all the codes then rescan and repost the scan. That might help.

You have a new headlight, so it should be good. Wiring harness short, a bad ground, controller problem ???

Hi
You say you have problems with the passenger side headlight and got a complete new unit and it still not works.
To me I looks like it have not been coded correct or at all.

Both sides need to be coded the same and according to Rosstech a Treg with air suspension need to be coded 03. Your right side is coded 17 and that is not right. Need to be 03 like the left side. After it have been correct coded you need to do basic setting.

Be sure the lamp house connector is nice and firm in to the cars connector by wiggling the lamp house. That connection can some times need to be wiggled to be good.

Heavy discharge of battery can maybe be found by switching of all consumers and connect a voltmeter between battery minus and ground. It must show very low voltage else you have a system there is pulling too much power. Take out all fuses one by one to locate the faulty system. Maybe you find something. Good luck.
