That sound - rattle from the engine

Hi Guys.

Anyone ever heard that ? Seems to be coming from the engine bay. I have a 2008 vr6 3.6 165k km

Thanx

Does it sound like a thud under your center console?
Well It looks like it's coming from somewhere behind the speedometer or the radio, in the engine bay. And this only occurs when the vehicule is moving, when on Park the engine souds normal... weird.
Check your drive shaft bearing, it’s a very common problem for the rubber that holds the bearing to break away leaving the bearing on the drive shaft unbalanced. You should do this sooner rather than later.
The best thing to do is to jack up your vehicle on all 4 on flat ground. Once the vehicle is off the ground. Disengage the parking brake, and place the vehicle into drive. You may need assistant from a second person for the acceleration. Get under, and observe the center bearing, directly under the rear passenger footwell. If your center bearing is bad, you'll see the driveshaft jumps all over the place, making the thud sound. I just changed out mine less than a week ago. Part is about $250. Total time is about 2 hours. It may take 3. I have the parts and tools to list if you need help.
OK thanx guys I'll take a look at this, but the sound is linked to the rpm's, Would'nt it be linked to the speed if it was the shaft ?
Yes, it would.
My 2008 Treg with nearly the same mileage makes the exact same sound and has done so for at least 40k miles. It is definitely not the driveshaft center bearing as I've replaced that support recently and nothing changed. It is definitely NOT inside of the passenger compartment either. I have wondered for awhile if it is a motor mount failure. Mid-winter when it is cold here (Northern Wisconsin) the sound does not occur nearly as often. During warmer months it happens all the time.

If it's not diagnosed properly, you'll get nothing but a guessing game. If it's outside, the only way to do this is either using a dyno platform for AWD (preventing the differential jerking effects from occurring), or jack it up all 4 and slowly accelerate. The thudding sound has various areas:

1. Center bearing (you managed to figure it out it wasn't from the previous replacement).

2. Transfer case (ohhh mercy...)

3. Rear differential (easier to deal with)

4. Wheel bearing (a bit of a pain, but easier than transfer case and differential)

5. Timing chain going bad (COSTLY! even when you're doing it for yourself as you need proper tool to drop the engine)

#1 is easy to detect visually and audibly. For #2 to #3, you have to closely inspect the sound using a mechanic stethoscope, or a long screwdriver to detect vibration sound around 1000 to 1200 RPM. It gets very loud around 1500RPM. #5, this is a bit of a trick, but it can easily be felt and heard around 1500 RPM.

Another suggestion is, when jacking up the vehicle on all 4, I tend to remove all wheels to prevent accidental launching. I rather take a bit of time and prevent a costly medical nightmare when I'm doing things at a home garage. Boys at the main garage I borrowed do the same thing, just to make sure we don't get hurt while parts are in motion, even when the vehicle is stationary.

Maybe the variable intake rod bearings gone bad.
The intake shifts positions (it has to 2 positions) from 11.000 RPM to 4000RPM.
If the bearings go bad it causes a rattle on the driver side.
Start the engine and listen to the intake while someone revs the engine a bit.
We have two people asking the same question. I am replying to the OP only, to prevent further confusion.

The sound appears to be linked to RPM, but I think it's only linked to when the accelerator pedal is pressed. Sure, the rpm's go UP when that happens, but the frequency of the noise doesn't appear to change with rpm, just the amplitude (sound level).

I would again look at the rear driveshaft and that pesky center bearing. The fact that there is no noise when the vehicle is in Park and stationary also points to the center driveshaft bearing.
I'd say check the intake shifter rod. Easy to check. Start the engine. Go near the intake (driver side where the rod is) and ask another person to rev it above 11000rpm.on idle you won't notice it much.

I missed the 3.6 there, my bad. But the SSP States both 32. and 3.6 FSI have the variable intake system. I see the 3.6 has no shifter rod but there is some other mecanism which control the variable intake switching positions based on RPM.
The area which might rattle, if variable intake there is, is circled in green

Did some digging here and the 3.6 in the Treg does use a variable intake. There is flap there so it's worth checking if this system or this flap is not going loose. Just a guess. Here is a pic from the 3.6 SSP.
I see the other person has a V8 so it might not be the same thing but if it helps why not :)

I have this exact noise on my ‘08 3.6. Has anyone figured out where it comes from?

The a/c line was rattling against the body of the car. There actually is a tsb for this very issue. The sound is now gone.
