Just took our first trip with our "new to us" 2011 Touareg Sport V-6 and the console read-out showed 26.9 mpg for the whole trip, from Lander, Wyoming over Togwotee Pass and into Jackson, Wyoming and back. Was pleasantly surprised as the sticker said I could expect 23 mpg on the highway. Is this just a anomaly or can I expect to get this type of mileage if I drive sanely in the future. In addition, love the handling on this vehicle, snow and ice over the pass on the way back and never a whimper from passengers and I felt the car was in control all the way.

Don't trust the computer. Do your calculations manually (or with a phone app) for a more accurate reading. And look at a few trips over time. Even one tank of gas can be off enough to "show" a difference (pump shut off too early or too late) that really isn't due to driving style or terrain.

I do plan on checking mileage against the computer when I fill up. However, it doesn't seems too far off with the distance we traveled and the amount of gas left showing on the fuel gauge. We'll see here in a while how close the computer is.

I dont understand how computer is calculating fuel consumption, when im driving normally and trying to be gentle on the throttle it shows 21L/100KM but yesterday night i finished my shift @ 5 am and there was no traffic so my driving style was in " maniac " mode :D and when i got home computer showed 19L/100KM and that is strange :)
According to computer if ill drive like a maniac all the time i get better fuel consumption:D

Last May we took our 2011 VR6 from Rochester, NY to Myrtle Beach, SC and back, the calculated MPG was in the low 25 mpg range for trip and the dash display was very close to calculated MPG by the 2nd tank.
At 75mph on the Interstate the VR6 gets very decent MPG with the 8 speed transmission.

I also see 25+mpg hwy on long trips. After doing brim to brim calculations, I've found the computer to be approx .5mpg optimistic...not bad.

Holy Hell, that's high.
My treg with stock tires was showing 13l/100km to my memory.
With the bigger tires, I'm showing 16.7ish.
Mind you with my logger app, it shows the I'm averaging 15.8l/100km with bigger tires.

Although with my most recent upgraded intake setup my first fill up after was 14.8 and that was with a couple wot runs.

After a real world calculation, I found my computer estimate to be optimistic only +1 mpg for the average. I stopped checking after the first few months of ownership, it was always the same.

80% around town, 20% highway , 3/4 tank of diesel

Computer Fuel Consumption 25 mpg average
Real Calculation 24 mpg average

I have never had to chance to drive the Touareg a long distance on highway without towing, so I don't know what the actual highway would be, but the trip computer will average out 29 mpg at 65 mph cruise control set for about 50 miles highway, in Connecticut (some grades to climb) when not towing.

Might be possible, would the need for a DPF regen during your gentle driving cause that? I would think if you're harder on the throttle, you'd have higher EGTs and therefore turn more of the fuel into go instead of just heat.

I think ill find out true fuel consumption only this way, fill up as much as it goes and then drive normally 100kms then fill up again and see how much money you have exploded :)
