The steering wheel has to be swapped out for a wheel with paddle shifters. Part: 7P6419091C is for the black leather steering wheel with paddle shifters. Part: 7P6419091F is for the heated black leather steering wheel with paddle shifters. Other part numbers could apply, brown leather, etc. The airbag should be a direct fit; no special wiring harness needed.

Step 1: Turn the steering wheel to 90 degrees. Use a small screwdriver to release the airbag clip on the back of the wheel and pull out slightly on that side of the airbag.

Step 2: Turn on the car and turn the wheel 180 degrees. Turn off the car. Repeat removal of the airbag clip on this side; the airbag should come all of the way out. There are two wiring connectors between the airbag and the steering wheel; disconnect both.

Step 3: Use a socket set and spline bit to remove the bolt holding the wheel down. Mark the point on the base of the wheel where the tick mark on the original wheel is positioned. Slide the original wheel off.

Step 4: Slide the new wheel on while paying attention to where the tick mark is positioned. Replace the bolt that holds the wheel in place. Reconnect the airbag connectors and push the airbag back on. The airbag should click back in to position with a little pressure.

Step 5: Coding.

VCDS
16 - Steering Wheel
07 - Coding
Long Coding Helper
Byte 2
Bit 5 (Tiptronic Installed)
Check the Box (Change from 0 to 1)

Step 6: Clear fault codes. I kept the car off while the airbag was disconnected so I didn't get an airbag fault code. I did have to clear a fault code off of the Steering Wheel Module 16 because I test drive the car before reprogramming the Module for the new wheel.

Just made the swap on mine. Now I have to wait for my laptop battery to charge so I can do the VCDS.

There was a lot more force than I expected to take the air bag off. Of course, I was afraid of it going off on me the whole time, so I might have been pulling like a scared pansy.

Once I got the center nut off, I tugged on the wheel to see how easy it would come off and it popped right off! Unfortunately, my sharpie was still in my pocket and I didn't mark the center spot. :( So, I tried to put it on right where the old one was and I thought I was fine because all the connectors had to be in a certain place... then I realized the connectors spin. :( Of course they spin with the wheel. :( Eh, I'm used to it. The handle bars on my motorcycle are not quite straight either!
^^^ That's very cool! I want to do this mod in the worst way. Can you provide a link where you got the steering wheel from? Is your interior black?

Please post updates as to how the coding goes. I would be interested in knowing any specifics.

Thanks in advance!
Success! Of course, now I'm paranoid about my steering wheel being straight. Living in Boston, there are no flat roads, so it's tough to tell. In the Offroad menu on the Nav the steering angle seems to indicate that I got it back on pretty straight.

My interior is brown and I found the wheel on Ebay in Germany. I used Google Chrome and had it translate eBay.de so I could find it. If you look at the posts above or on the previous page, you will find links to where others found theirs. A few posts up from here (#51) I posted a list of all the different model numbers for steering wheels.

I'll post a pic later.

Ah, skipped right past that. Thanks!

Steering wheel is definitely not on straight. I figured I would be ok for the weekend, but apparently the Stability control is not happy when the vehicle is going straight for a while and the steering wheel indicates that you are turning left 1 degree the whole time.
What is the latest and greatest p/n for the black steering wheel. I need this for my r-line.
Check my post above with all the part numbers.

Can you please provide the steering wheel part number for the Brown wheel with paddle shifters + Heating?

Also did your car had heating option from factory? if not, did the new heated wheel worked?
Seriously, I'm happy to help, but this is the third person looking for a part number when I spent a long time posting EVERY POSSIBLE PART NUMBER just 10 posts above. And it would be only 3 posts above if people would read more before posting. Even reading the responses to other people asking for part numbers would send you back up the thread a tad.

As for the heat, my vehicle had a heated wheel to begin. Adding hear would be additional wiring and parts, but I don't know what would be involved, exactly.
A few questions on how the paddles work.

1. If you are in "automatic mode" and in, say, 6th gear and want to kick it down to 5th and enter "paddle mode", do you click the "minus" just once and you are in 5th and in "paddle mode" or do you need to enter "paddle mode" by a first click and then click again to go down a gear?

2. I'm assuming you leave the console shifter in the Automatic mode when you start using the plus and minus to enter paddle mode. How do you get back into "auto mode" while still driving?

3. Does it auto downshift just like when using the tiptronic mode with the console shifter?

4. When at a complete stop, can you use the paddles to bump it into 2nd gear to start? I do that quit a bit with the tiptronic to avoid the short 1st gear.

5. Does the tiptronic stop working when you change the VAG Code to activate the paddles?

I use the tiptronic a lot and don't mind using it, but thinking about the expense to change to the paddle made me think of some of these questions. Thanks.

1-not sure (no longer have mine)
2- click and hold plus for a few seconds
3- yes
4- mine did, for some on here it didn't
5-no
See below.

Just click it once. To be honest, I use the paddles mostly for up shifting when I'm all done accelerating and the automatic is still anticipating more.

2. I'm assuming you leave the console shifter in the Automatic mode when you start using the plus and minus to enter paddle mode. How do you get back into "auto mode" while still driving?

As stated above, you can hold the + (the one on the right) or it will time out after a little while, maybe 30 sec and switch back to auto.

3. Does it auto downshift just like when using the tiptronic mode with the console shifter?

Yes, it acts just like if you were in tiptronic. The only difference is having it time out and go back to auto.

4. When at a complete stop, can you use the paddles to bump it into 2nd gear to start? I do that quit a bit with the tiptronic to avoid the short 1st gear.

Yes. Again, though, some have had different experiences, but if you can do it in tiptronic, then you can with the paddles. This would still be controlled by the time out, though, so you would need to upshift shortly before take off.

5. Does the tiptronic stop working when you change the VAG Code to activate the paddles?

No. You can use the paddles or the shifter when in tiptronic. If you use tiptronic a lot, then the paddles would be a nice addition.

1. Click once

2. Leave the gear lever in d/s, the transmission will go back to auto if the car thinks you are cruising thus don't need fast acceleration after a set time, which has different algorithms in D or S. It goes back to auto quicker in D than in S. It also stays in "manual" mode while braking, even past that set time, anticipating acceleration. To manually get back to auto mode, just flip the gear lever to the manual side then back.

In addition to other replies for Q1-Q5, for Q2 you can also just move gear stick from Auto(D) across to Manual and back again - all done in a second.

Edit: beaten to the punch by previous post.
Thanks T-Reguan, k21975, yuyueyuyue and unkydunky. Answered my questions and it sounds great.
Found another way to tell the car go back to automatic. Hold + for 3 seconds, it will return to auto. It's slower than using the shift knob, but this is more subtle.

Also, I'm trying to retrofit heated steering wheel on my Lux. I bought my steering wheel with heating elements. But the clock spring does not have a port to plug into. I'm wondering if I can change just the clock spring from 4H0953568F to 4H0953568H since I don't want to change the steering module 7P6953507L, which may involve re-calibrating the ABS module.

A new clock spring would give me the pins the heater needs and I would just need to bypass factory wires and get the power directly from fuse #11.

I'm going to test if module 7P6953507L is capable of showing the steering wheel heating icon on RNS850. This may allow me to control fuse slot #11, which is the power to the heated steering wheel in a "factory like" fashion even it's getting power directly from fuse box. If 7P6953507L cannot be coded this way, then I will just put an external button to control the heater...

more to come...

Thanks for the research. Anxious to see what works out. I also have a heated wheel (Exec TDI) now and am anxious to get the proper parts to add paddles.
So coded HVAC, RNS850 does let me put an icon on there, but I'm not sure if it can control current at fuse #11 on Lux models. Don't have a multimeter with me at work, will do a test tonight.

Apparently VCDS tells me coding is out of range when I changed coding on Channel 16, as expected. Will see how it reacts with a new clock spring.

But looking at owners with heated steering wheels complaining how slow the climate menu pops up in the morning, I'm open to the idea of hardwiring it to the car and putting an SPST switch somewhere on the dash then call it a day.

Will start another thread.
