T3 Steering wheel paddle shifters

The steering wheel has to be swapped out for a wheel with paddle shifters. Part: 7P6419091C is for the black leather steering wheel with paddle shifters. Part: 7P6419091F is for the heated black leather steering wheel with paddle shifters. Other part numbers could apply, brown leather, etc. The airbag should be a direct fit; no special wiring harness needed.

Step 1: Turn the steering wheel to 90 degrees. Use a small screwdriver to release the airbag clip on the back of the wheel and pull out slightly on that side of the airbag.

Step 2: Turn on the car and turn the wheel 180 degrees. Turn off the car. Repeat removal of the airbag clip on this side; the airbag should come all of the way out. There are two wiring connectors between the airbag and the steering wheel; disconnect both.

Step 3: Use a socket set and spline bit to remove the bolt holding the wheel down. Mark the point on the base of the wheel where the tick mark on the original wheel is positioned. Slide the original wheel off.

Step 4: Slide the new wheel on while paying attention to where the tick mark is positioned. Replace the bolt that holds the wheel in place. Reconnect the airbag connectors and push the airbag back on. The airbag should click back in to position with a little pressure.

Step 5: Coding.

VCDS
16 - Steering Wheel
07 - Coding
Long Coding Helper
Byte 2
Bit 5 (Tiptronic Installed)
Check the Box (Change from 0 to 1)

Step 6: Clear fault codes. I kept the car off while the airbag was disconnected so I didn't get an airbag fault code. I did have to clear a fault code off of the Steering Wheel Module 16 because I test drive the car before reprogramming the Module for the new wheel.

Very interesting. Maybe I'll start looking for a black wheel without an airbag. Where did you find yours?
I bought it on ebay
Here's the photo, haven't had a sunny day yet... looks a little bit odd, but acceptable :D I can trade this look with the paddles;) Coming from a manual car, that delayed kickdown always turns me off. 3 quick tap to get into the power band is just so much better.
Wheel still looks great though. Thank you for confirming heated part is not plug and play. I will be looking into paddle only then!
For people who are still waiting, I have something to annoy you:p

That looks great, is the r line wheel with paddles thicker than the regular steering wheel as well?

I think the thickness is the same, as far as I can tell.
Great stuff, subscribed!
Love the idea of paddle shifters...enjoy them on my Citroen (probably need them given how their diesel engines are built). But really doubt I would use them on a 8-speed settings + Sports mode.
Maybe when time and money decide to ring some bells in me ;)

The shifting logic of S Mode is decent on merging lanes, etc, I still use it now when I'm super lazy at the end of the day.

But 8 speed on paddles is manageable, still a lot less work than a 6mt. It's amazing how far auto transmissions have improved on both response and economy.

The thing that made the decision to install the paddles is driving on snow when a slight touch on the brake would lock the wheels. I find myself constantly shifting up using the shift lever whenever I wanted to go down a gear for some engine brake...
So after some patience, I found a used OEM wheel with paddles. It is black, and just a normal wheel, no r-line, no heating, etc. Only paddles.

I ended up winning the bid on ebay for... $10...
But $32 for shipping due to it being from Sweden and it should be here a few weeks. I am very excited and still surprised I actually won the auction. I will post up pics of mine installed once it arrives.

wut, I cannot believe this!
But good job! Even with shipping, the price is fantastic!

Where did you get the paddle extensions? Did you use double sided tape to install them?

Thanks.

also on ebay, I think I paid 18 bucks shipped, but waited for 2 weeks.
used double sided tape.
Finally got mine in and just finished the install. My wheel ended up having the heating function too, didn't realize it until I got it. Nowhere for the heated harness to plug into though as someone else had said.

Install went well. I broke a little tab on the back of the airbag, one of the spring things, but I was able to push the white clip into the wheel and get the spring part to stay on airbag so it went back together perfect. Airbag did not want to come off the old wheel. Oh well, minor incident and it still works properly.

One quick check mark in the steering wheel section of vag com and they were enabled.

Now to get paddle extensions...

congrats! You got a very good deal! The white tab on the back of the airbag is probably the horn switch, but you still get other 3 keeping the contacts separated, so might not be a big issue.
Yeah I think it is part of the horn contacts. I was able to get it all back together and I tested it and the horn still works by pressing from all over and the whole airbag still springs back.
Gotta love this forum! 30 minute job from go to whoa. Thanks ever so much to the OP.
Next retrofit TPMS.

cheers

I revisited this today in the hopes to find a brown one and I think I've located one. It has a few scuffs, but should be acceptable. I also found lots of part number info, see below...

The Touareg 7P Steering wheel is part numbers:
7P6419091 - Basic Wheel
7P6419091A - +Heat
7P6419091B - Basic Wood/Leather
7P6419091C - +Heat, +Tiptronic
7P6419091D - ???
7P6419091E - Basic Wood/Leather w/ different wood
7P6419091F - +Heat, + Tiptronic, +'R' Badge
7P6419091G - +Heat (Same as A?)
7P6419091H - +'R' Badge
7P6419091I - ???
7P6419091J - +Heat, +'R' Badge
7P6419091K - +Heat, +'R' Badge (Same as J?)

Color codes are after the part number
NGB - black/black
X0U - natural brown/black
ICS - titanium black (Added in 2013 for R-line only?)

So, ideally, I'm looking for a 7P6419091C X0U. The F would work too, but I don't need the 'R' Badge.

Also, I'm still a little unsure if the color code is X'zero'U or X'ohh'U.

This is the one I found.

Hopefully the scuffs are as minor as they look in the pictures. I paid about $260 USD shipped. About double what I wanted to pay, but they seem very rare and brand new the best I could find was about $1,080.
Just as an FYI as well, the black plastic piece at the bottom of the wheel where the "R" logo would be as well as the steering wheel controls just pull out of the wheel. When I got my wheels with paddles, my controls and piece at bottom where all in much better shape, so I swapped them over. They just pull straight out of the wheel. The lower one is a pain, pulling twisting and pulling it will come out. There are little plugs that hold it in.
That's a good idea, thanks for the heads up. One of the scuffs they showed was on the right controls.
