Hi There,

Just spent 9 hours putting in the OEM backup camera kit from OEMplus / Kufatec. Its works well but there were a couple things not in the instructions that wasted a few hours that I thought I'd pass on.

If you have the factory tow package then the instructions say you can tap into the CAN bus in the rear at the red connector. This is much more convenient than by the drivers knees. The instructions didn't say that you can also get continuous 12V power for the camera controller from the red wire with yellow stripe on the same connector. Also the CAN and +12V power wires come long enough to get to the dash but do not cut them if you are going to the red connector cause if you do the only way you can tell CAN high and low is by trial and error.

Couple other things to note. The light in the glove box has a very short and tight lead, drop the box the absolute minimum before disconnecting. I spent two hours rebuilding the glove box light assembly torn apart by the tight wire. Removing the casings on the FAKRA connector will help you feed it through the rubber hatch tubes. Finally you'll break less plastic clip tabs if its warmer.

Hope this helps someone else.

Trent

Great tips, how about scanning and posting a pdf of the instructions for people who may decide to hack together a "kit" on their own?

More notes and instructions attached

Hi Again,

Forgot a couple more things that were not in the instructions. When connecting to the CAN lines at the towing controller you just tap into the wires in parallel i.e. don't cut the existing wires but just attach CAN high to CAN high and CAN low to low.

VCDS coding took a while to figure out from the VAG picture but was doable. The first step is to find and checkoff the Rear Camera check box in the CAN controller (19) to add it to the network. Also when coding the Rear Camera Controller 6C the initial data is gibberish so just replace with the number in the instructions and note that PDC is Park Distance Control and AFK is the german abbreviation for the Towing Package.

Also here are the instructions, a good set in German and an incomplete, machine translated version in English. Refer to all the pictures in the German one with the English Text.

Now off to upgrade the stereo...

Enjoy,
Trent

they had these on sale at kufatec a few months ago with the storage of cameras, I noticed now the price has gone up by over 100 dollars to just under 1000 dollars. Maybe one day if there is a sale I'll jump on it. The German instructions are pretty detailed and it seems like a "relatively" simple job. Thanks for the post!

I was told and was given a diagram with my VIN number on it that my 2012 TDI Exec was wired for the camera. I will have the dealer check to make sure this is correct but has anyone checked to see if the harness is in place for the four cameras that might be installed on the vehicle. The parts people said the camera units were not available yet from VW but they did have a price for the camera and control unit which was within a couple of hundred bucks of the complete kit from OEMPLUS.

My concern is with the cost of installation. I am not qualified to DIY. Anyone have an idea of the cost of a professional install?

My VIN is WVGFK9BP5CD004797.

I brought my car to the dealer. The service manager is the person who sent for the document which shows that the wiring is there. He also indicated that he talked to VW USA and he was also assured that the wiring harness is in place.

I believe him. This does not mean, he cautioned, that the package from OEMplus will definitely fit the harness, etc., etc. He said that VW indicated that cameras would be made available as an OEM item when production usage of them has been met.

I don't know what all this means. I am just relating what I have learned and I have been very persistent.

Wow this is big news.....So I'll either have the wiring or be like 900 off......If it has the wiring and controller......all we need is the actual camera in the hitch.

On a side note if that pic shows all the camera wiring is there does that mean area view will be just simply 3 more cameras and a plug in away?

I think just the wiring is there, not the controller but I'm not sure. My dealership would not remove the panels to see (without me making an appointment and paying them). It would be great if a knowledgeable 2012 owner would look to see just what has been installed and give us a report. I think the best place to look would be the location of the control unit.

I have no issue pulling my car apart tomorrow to see. I'm wondering if its because yours was when it was getting close the time the cameras were going back into production. You and I are 1000 trucks apart....
