Hey guys, our 2010 Touareg TDI has about 46,xxx km on it and my dad got it into his head that he wants to get the transmission fluid change.

Now, I'm all for maintenance and such but I am not certain when the transmission service is recommended by Volkswagen and if it's a simple job or not. Our older b5.5 passat tdi automatic has some transmission issues (common in this car) so I am a bit hesitant to change the transmission fluid on an expensive suv.

Has anybody had their transmission fluid changed? What about the rear differential?

Thank you

I changed my transmission fluid at 50K miles.I'll do it again at 100K miles. To me, it did feel like it made a difference. I did it myself and the fluid was much darker than the new fluid. The inside of the belly pan and magnets on the belly pan were covered with metal fines/dust. I changed the fluid, filter and gasket. Drove around for 2 weeks and changed just the fluid again. The fluid the second time was also darker than the new fluid. For me, the second fluid change was to give the new fluid a chance to flush the old fluid out of the transmission cooler and torque converter. When you just drop the transmission pan you do not drain the fluid out of the torque converter and transmission cooler.

The front, center and rear diff. oil changes are easy. You really can do them yourself. VW suggests to replace the fill and drain plugs each time you change the oil. I haven't and I've had no leaks. There are a few threads on here about the front, center and rear differential fluid change, use the SEARCH function. I have done them all twice already. For the center diff. I use the VW OE oil. For the front and rear diffs I use Mobil 1 75w-90. In my observation of Mobil 1 in two oil changes I change the oil at 30K mile intervals. In 30k miles the front diff oil is dark brown, almost black and the rear is brown. Others here have also noticed the front diff oil darkens much quicker. The center diff oil is a shade of brown.

If you choose to do he transmission yourself there are a few threads on here explaining the process.

If your Tregs shifting manner is what has your dad thinking the transmission fluid has to be changed....first try a transmission reset. Supposedly our transmissions "learn" our driving styles and things get thrown off through time due to fluid viscosity, wear, etc. Find yourself a back road or some place where you can accelerate up through the gears and slow down through the gears allowing the trans to down shift on its own. Something like a 5 to 10 mile stretch. Get there, turn Treg off, put key in ignition, turn key on, but do not start engine, hold down the gas peddle all the way to the floor for 10 seconds, release gas pedal, turn key off. Start Treg up and accelerate as you would normaly drive allowing for you to go from 1st to 6th gear. The take your foot off the gas peddle and allow your self to coast or slowly come to a stop allowing the Treg to downshift on its own the best you can. Try and drive conservatively for the next few miles as the transmission is "learning" again. Hopefully this makes a difference for you.
