This is not so much a DIY, but some tips on removing the ballast from your T1 HID housing.

First, remove the headlight in question. There are plenty of how-to's on a multitude of sites for this procedure.

Once the headlight is out, you'll notice this nice plastic rod, blocking the ballast:

Remove the two screws here:

Lift it up & out, the rod isn't attached at the other end:

Unscrew the ballast, making sure to not pull too much. The wiring is just long enough to get your hands on it to unplug it:

Installation is the reverse of removal. Make sure you're careful with the screws, it's plastic & will strip quite easily. Don't blame me if you ruin your $400 headlight housing.

Good thread and pix always say more than the helpful words!

The rods are part of the headlight beam adjustment system.

The adjusters can get brittle through age and heat, and break.

The good news is the individual rods are available as spare parts from your friendly VW dealer.

Make the parts guy's life easier by taking the bits you need in to the counter.
