Hi,
I want to get a spare key cut to lock and unlock the car (2009 model) when I go surfing, I will leave the factory key with electronics in the car, it does not have proximity sensors, so guessing it is ok to leave it in the car. Also my car does not have the valet key that other high end models seems to have.
After reading few forum posts, it look like I can get a duplicate key (steel blade only) made for not that much.
Saw this blade for $15, and it needs to be cut. https://carkeystoyou.com.au/product/volkswagen-and-audi-surf-key/
One of the locksmiths I spoke with said a duplicate key like the above is good for locking the doors but SHOULD NOT be used in the ignition key slot, otherwise it will capture the key and will require an expensive trip to the dealer to get it to release. Is this correct?
I tried couple of VW dealers but they were not helpful. I am still waiting for their call back.
Below post says the locksmith needs to have access to key's transponder code, is this correct? If so where do I get this from?
www.clubtouareg.com
If anyone knows a good locksmith in Sydney, Aus, that knows about these cars and can make a "surf" key, please let me know.
Thanks!

Surf key
Is it possible, for a 2007 T2, to lock it with just a mechanical key (i.e. no electronics in the key fob, lock the electronic key in the glove box)? I go stand-up paddling and have to wrap the key in paper towel inside a zip-lock back in my pocket and hope like hell I don't go A/T too many times...
