I am considering getting a 2012 Torareg. I am wondering about the heat gain from that very big sunroof. I live in Las Vegas where the summers are very hot and many vehicles A/C systems struggle to keep up. Adding that big sunroof seems like a problem to me. If I do not get a Sport with model, it seems I have to get the sunroof. Does anyone know how the sunroof effects the A/C cooling in very hot areas. Does anyone kow if you can order a Lux w/o Sunroof?

I have a black Lux with the full sun roof, and we had a hot summer this last year, but probably not Vegas hot, but it was still pretty hot.

I was pleasantly surprised how cool the interior of the vehicle stayed. We would often leave the inner screen closed during the hot days, and crack the sunroof so that it was open in the back, but overall, I don't think that it was much hotter, if any, than any other vehicle that I've ever owned.

I've never seen a Lux/Exec without the full panoramic roof. I don't think that it can be ordered that way in the states...

I hope VW fixed their leaky sunroofs. Ours has been repaired once, and will be replaced mid November.

I had the same concerns, upper 90's temp and humidity where I am, and the AC in my last German car was good but not the best (87 944 Turbo).

But not to worry, very good heat rejection glass in the sunroof and the AC can create a meat locker.

During the summer I always keep the pop-up section of the roof cracked open to help let some of that heat out.

I always order my new vehicles without sunroof when I can, since I barely use them anyways. No more worrying about clogged sunroof drains. No leaks ever. Significantly more head room space(most vehicles not all) without sunroof. For me it's win win.

Older VW's and Audi's used to have a solar roof which use to be a solar panel instead of a plain glass roof. When the interior temp got to a certain level the sunroof would open a tiny gap and the solar panel would slowly spin the ventilation fan creating a draft. The rain sensor would override this function and close the roof if it detected rain. This was a nifty function and lowered the temp considerably in the car.

Many years ago, a work colleague rolled his company car and a fence stake came in through the glass sunroof and impaled itself in the seat right between his legs.

As he said at the time, if he had been built like John Holmes it would not have been a happy ending!

As it was, he walked away but none of us ever ordered company cars with sunroofs after that!!

I have both a 2009 tdi jetta and 2012 Touareg tdi with sun roofs and spend 6mos in FL. Not a problem with sunroof heat issues. I would pick the lighter colored Treg which means silver or white. My Treg is cool silver.

I like the airy feel of the sunroofs. JP

Sunroofs in Vegas....... I drove a EXEC model Treg last month when the temps were still over 100*

A/C blasting my body was cool, but the top of my head was HOT. it was enough to decide i did not want a sunroof....

Bummer with that is i had to choose the sport which has a few less dodads and geewizz gadgets.... Also no leather, BUT i'm COMPLETELY happy with my selection....

If the Treg had a real sun shade that blocked all the heat and light like older cars had with sun roofs, i would have got it. but that sun screen crap is exactly that IMO. PLus in a few years i'm sure it will become brittle or sag.

Keep in mind i tend to keep cars for MUCH longer than the average american.... i generally average 7-9 years before getting a new ride...so for me, no sun roof sport model was the way to go....

You can not accurately judge that sun screen right now as Vegas temps have substantially dropped, but i warn you now, Its hot.. just think when its 115*....

I defer to the NV owners,but I have a possible solution. Why not have the sunroof tinted like some people do with their windshield and side windows. Should cut most of the problem of light getting through. Just a suggestion. JP

Honestly i had considered this. problem is that i have an older mustang with a sunroof and i tinted the glass with 5%....

Within 2 years the tint was peeling and shrinking...... it didn't work that well... just TOO hot, and this was in Dallas heat, not even Vegas....

Plus for me i found a sport model for 6k less than sticker so i bought it.... VEgas dealers thought they were doing me a favor by sellling thier Tregs at 2500.00 over sticker.. i talked them down to sticker, but then they wouldn't budge....

the only option i really wanted was the split armrest and leather... bothof which i can live without, they were just things to have.

i may later research installing the different armrest..

Thanks for the comments. Most of you confirmed my thoughts. I have a 2003 Yukon, the Touareg will be it's replacement. At 104 degrees, the Yukon's a/c works , OK. At 110, it can not keep up. That big sunroof just doesn't make sense in Las Vegas. I would like a Lux without the sunroof, but not to be.

I dont know the new ones but my V8 A/C kept it very good ad Dead Valley last year at July 3rd where the wheather was around 120F.
