Hey gang! I’m new to the Touareg community, just bought a 2013 VW Touareg TDI Sport a few days back. Already having my fair share of issues hahaha but I’m loving it!!

so today I opened the sunroof, later went to close it andddddd it wouldn’t close. Couldn’t figure it out so I drove to VW and they proceeded to tell me it would be $125 just to diagnose it, and also that they were booked a few weeks out.

got back in the Touareg and, lo and behold. It closed right up. I have absolutely no clue what was wrong with it but now I’m a bit scared to open it again 😂😂 has anyone else had this issue before??

This takes me back to 1991 when a friend of mine called asking if my friend, at the time working at independent Euro repair shop, could look at the sunroof of new "new Beemer".
It had happened on a drizzly day.
Mind you, it had happened in Ukraine when owning a new Beemer 7 series was a sign of prestige and money.
Imagine my astonishment when my friend turned up in his gunship grey Beemer and an umbrella sticking out of the sunroof. We laughed for few minutes, and I confirmed that my friend could look at the problem.
Now, imagine driving a new Beemer with a multi-color parasol sticking out of sunroof all the way through downtown of Kiev!
Without a doubt the sight of a Beemer with a parasol covering sunroof had left some vivid memories among many bystanders that day!

Welcome,
I've had a similar issue,
... but some more info is required...! Does it click, does it attempt to move, does it move and then retract, does it growl or squeal, does it do nothing...????
Again, again and again, you must do some research here and see if anybody else has had problems and see if the fault is similar to yours. Your knowledge base would increase significantly.
VCDS software will tell you a lot more if you are willing to dig into it. If you are not willing to do that then a good independent garage that have Touareg experience is your friend, or pay huge $$$$ for dealer intervention!
Sorry to be so blunt, but its difficult to assist with very little info to go on with

Thanks so much for the reply. I'm planning on spending the day figuring it out more. I'll dive into the forums and do some more research, you're totally right! Ordered VCDS software and it's on the way.

The sunroof closes like normal, and right when it's almost completely shut, it retracts. Doesn't growl or squeal, just goes to close like normal, and when it's almost there, it opens back up. I had a 2016 GLI before this and it would do the exact same thing sometimes, but after a few tries it would close. Sounds like this is a fairly common issue on VW's.

Was right next to a vw dealer at the time it happened so I stopped by real quick to ask them. They wanted $125 just to diagnose the issue and couldn't book me in for 3 weeks.... what a joke.

Sounds like it requires lubrication on the tracks and rubber seals. Does it almost close then retracts slightly when its cold? I would lubricate first, then plug in VCDS once you receive it, interrogate the module, check the load on electric motor. If it sees an increase of amperage above the set point the it retracts. Or... could be the safety pinch setting, incase someone finger is trapped when closing, system see a load increase and backs off to clear the obstruction (ie. fingers)

I know this is an old thread but my 2012 treg v6 lux, had the "close then back up" issue today. I lubricated it but could not get it to close by turning the dial. Then I tried just inching it closed with the dial, just an inch at a time towards the end and it closed with no trouble. Maybe this will help someone.
