I tackled this yesterday. What I found I haven't seen reported. The splices all looked fine, nothing was falling apart, until you cut the wires. It wasn't as simple as snipping and re-splicing--the wires were corroded/tarnished inside. Measuring just a short length of wire with the ohms meter it was adding a huge amount of resistance. I ended up having to cut many many feet of wire out to get to clean/shiny copper. The corrosion made it allll the way up, just a few inches before the firewall. For a while I thought I was screwed and the corrosion made it all the way into the firewall and out of reach, but I had just enough clean wire. You can imagine the anxiety as I cut a few inches at a time and kept finding more tarnished copper.

That's a word of warning as these cars get older. If all water ingress hasn't been addressed and these splices replaced, that corrosion will continue to spread like cancer into your wire harness.
