Well, it's something to think about. I recently did it for an Escort on my Dakota. I used the power from the overhead map light. It was a real clean installation. I installed a fuse under the cover. The cover just snaps off if necessary.

If you do the fuse box route, make sure that the wire does not wrap around the a pillar. If the airbags go off, they will likely rip that wire out and will probably pull your radar detector and make it another flying object in the cabin.
That was one of my concerns as well. As an electrician for over 30 years, I am always looking for the safest and mose efficient way to wire something. The method that was illustrated above will work, but it wouldn't be my choice for a "clean install".
