Steering wheel height adjustment

I swear my steering wheel will not travel up as far as it should. It seems to stop short of where it should electronically go to. I can't see the top of the MFD or the gauges and the levers seem low because of this. Does anyone know is there some sort of limit switch or something I could try to troubleshoot ? My touareg 1 definitely went a lot higher but maybe this is a T2 thing? Just seems very low.

anyone? I just ran vcds and tested the switch and it recognizes when I move it up down in and out just fine, but like I said it won't go up the whole way. Very odd. Should I just start ripping the darn thing apart?

Ended up removing the shroud off the steering column. Found there is a plastic cover on the underside that covers a belt drive system that runs the gears that raise and lower the steering column. Apparently someone heffered themselves in or out of the car by hanging on the steering wheel and the right gear jumped a cog in the gear that goes between the motor and the drive gear. I took the belt off and manually turned the drive gear with a Pliers and felt it jump back into position. I reassembled and put the belt back on and it now travels the whole way up and down! Can't believe the difference it makes, I couldn't see the cluster before because the wheel was so darn low it blocked it, and my stalks were always too low, if always reach above them which was a real pita...

Hi Fission2, I am setting about doing this job on my R50 now and wishing to confirm how the lower shroud comes off the steering column. I see a hole on the underside with a T25 set right up in there not sure if this is the one to undo to release the shroud.

Your tip on this one please?

Regards

Pete

Well done. Glad you got it fixed.

Thanks for this thread, I have the same issue with my newly acquired R50. Top of steering wheel obscures the top of the MFD just like you explained. I was thinking it's a VCDS thing to rectify (I haven't got my HEX-NET yet) but seems just a bit of handy work to sort it. I will be glad to resolve it instead of having to duck down to see it fully.

Regards

Pete.

Thanks Steve, that's a relief. I am curious then how or why the earlier poster guy resolved his issue by opening it up and adjusting the drive system for the wheel height motor. Maybe was unaware of the resetting procedure.

Will be in touch soon.

Hi guys I have just purchased a 2004 v8 Touareg and i am loving it, however I seem to have a problem with the steering wheel not going up all the way. it makes noise but doesnt move. it goes in and out but not up or down I think I saw it go down a little but stopped as it didnt go back up so I wasnt going to risk it.
I would appreciate your help on this. Thanks guys

So the problem is that both sides of the mechanism aren’t aligned and the it stucks before reaching its highest point. I fixed it by removing the belt, then manually turning the left knob clockwise and simultaneously pressing the button for moving up. When reached the highest point I installed back the belt and everything works fine…
