Aloha form Hawaii!

I own a 2008 V6 Treg with about 110K miles. About 30k miles ago the amber colored ESP Traction control light came on. When I've been at the VW Dealer for service they've mentioned something about the traction control sensor in the steering column needs to be replaced. I haven't really ever worried about it until a few weeks ago when out of the blue the steering wheel locked up, a warning sound came on and the screen read "Steering Column Lock Workshop." I knew enough to not get it towed to VW and instead rented a Vag-Com, did a little research and was able to unlock the immobilizer. Amazing how with one click of a button everything returned to normal.

It's been about 2 weeks now and there have been no other issues, but I'm thinking the immobilizer was linked to the steering column or the traction control light. Before returning the Vag-Com I ran a scan and here were the results for the ABS section:

My initial thought was to look up the part number 7L0 907 379 K, but that appears to be the ABS brake pump, and I kind of doubt that was the issue. What is catching my eye is the third fault 00778 - Steering Angle Sensor (G85) 014 - Defective. I don't know the exact part number for the steering angle sensor, but as I've looked online it seems to be referring to the clock spring in the steering column, which I believe is what the VW dealer spoke about in the past. Before I order this part and take off my steering wheel, I thought I'd open it up the community for feedback. I found a great post on mytreg.com, from somebody with a similar issue, but after replacing the sensor, they finally discovered it was a blown fuse. I went through the fuses, but didn't find any issues.

I'm sure if I have the VW dealer look at it again they'll charge at least $2K to do it, so any help the Treg community can offer would be much appreciated.

Mahalo,

Andy

PS I also suspect the steering angle sensor because the backup camera's hover guide lines disappear when turning the car and the scan for that section reads:
