Since the facelift Touareg (Touareg2, or T2) is being sold in higher numbers, questions regarding VAG-COM coding modifications to these vehicles are increasing.

Unfortunately for Touareg2 owners, there have been substantial changes to the underlying computer network in the vehicle, and most of the modules now communicate solely over the CAN-BUS. This is not unlike the newer Audi's, Jetta's and Rabbits in production today. Gone are the days of base 10 module codings. Say hello to long coding in hexadecimal.

As far as I know, there are no known coding modifications for the Touareg2, nor have I seen much discussion on such modifications. Let's see if we can't change that, or if we can gather any information on the subject that might exist, especially on international sites like Touareg Freunde.

I have found some codes that relate to new modules, including the DRL features, but the results are unknown and possibly untested. We need some brave Touareg2 owners with a new CAN based VAG-COM cable to do some testing. Please post you results and information in this thread.

Hey TREGinginCO, get that T2 back from Michigan before they crush it so we can do some "experimentation" on it!

(OFF-Topic) I could see you guys playing mad scientist up there on it now!

While you're at it, strip off the air suspension and ship it to Vegas, and I'll send back my steel suspension parts! :D

(/Back on topic)

Too bad we didn't have time to hook up the Vag-Com while we had it. It may have given some insight into what's going on behind the scenes.

Also, on Ross-Tech's site, it mentions that the newer CAN-capable cables are required for Touaregs manufactured after Novemver 2006. Is this only for the face-lifted models that were being sold overseas, or was it for ALL Touaregs (old and new face) after that time?

We did determine at the rally the cable I got is usable on the T2? I hope it is since I got it at such a good deal and would hate to have to buy another one when I get my 09 TDI V6. ;)

Yeti, I don't remember the exact cable you had. We needed a Hex+CAN cable. My cable is only a HEX (K-Line) cable.

From what I can gather (Mainly from Ross Tech) at least some of the '07 production run (Production date after Nov. 30, 2006) has what they call "Touareg Mark II" internals. These can be identified by the body code, which (I think) are characters 7-9 of the VIN. Mark I models are "7LA" and Mark II models are "7L6". I wonder if this started when the FSI V-8 was introduced, wasn't this a mid-year addition (IIRC, you could not get a '07 with a V-8 early in the model year). Anyway my '07 V-8 FSI has a VIN that has the 7L6 code, s/n (last 6 digits of the VIN) of 023xxx. The engine code is "BAR", btw.

It's the Mark II cars that require the HEX-USB+CAN cable (or the SER version) for full functionality. I gather that the older cables work on some modules.

I've got the FSI V8 but my VIN is 021xxx so I'm guessing I have the old internals. I do have the HEX-USB+CAN cable since my jetta runs on CAN bus.

Nick, can you confirm this with a scan sometime?

Body code is 7L6 with a build date of week 29/2006 ('07 model year)..both these taken from the stampings on the body behind the gas flap. Ran a VAG-COM scan and a number of components are 7L6, and a few are 7L0. What's interesting is the "Chassis Type" comes up as 7L. Not sure if this is different in earlier/later models...engine comes up as 7L0 910 560, not sure what code it translates into.

For your viewing pleasure: I'm guessing the fault relating to voltage are due to it sitting in airport parking lots for a week at a time:

Humm. Mine also has 29/2006 as the build date. Maybe the Nov 30, 2006 date was the start of production for the T2 and we do have Mk I internals?

hmmmm, not sure but good question.......I haven't had too much VAG time with either of my vehicles but the long coding on the Jetta is very very different than the coding on the Touareg.

As an aside I am so glad I bought this '07, it seems to have all the bugs worked out of it and has been so reliable. Hasn't had a single issue.
