Speedbump Terror !!!

Hi all,
Firstly thanks to all that posted on my last question it was really appreciated.
Right now down to the pig, every time i go over a speed bump then accelerate away i get a rythmic clunking which sounds like somthing has been pushed out of line from under the front, then as i accelerate away the noise gradually dissapears as if its centralized again, I have noticed this once whilst reversing but have never heard it from just simply driving without speed bumps. The mightly Treg has had a new prop carrier bearing, Near side drive shaft, both front wheel bearings, disks and pads and on off side rear wheel bearing, so im kinda hoping that this dispells alot off possible faults. Secondly ive also noticed im seeing the ESP light up now and again at slow speeds on cornering which could be related i suppose. Ive plugged my VAG scanner in and its not picking up any faults, so im stuck :(. Im looking to sell now to upgrade to a 3.0 altitude so i kinda need to sort it before i can pass it on, the Treg is a 2.5Tdi R5 2005 if this helps.

If someone could please shine a ray of light on this annoying clunk id be over the moon.

Cheers
Slaky

I posted in a another thread way earlier... my 2004v8 has exactly the same symptoms!!! esp on slow corners, clunking over speedbumps. ( even try to avoid them now at any cost...) really hope this can be figured out. i have tried to VAG com it, i first thought an wheel speed sensor might be dirty, but it did not work. the esp lights up at 60km/h but monitoring the wheel sensors with vag diconnects at about 20km/h but the readings are identical on each wheel.

Solved for me!

The dealers told me to replace both the centre and rear diff /stepper motors "because they are sticking"For a crazy amount of money. They also said the steering rack needs replacing because it was "hard/stiff" All in the dealer quote came to R48000 (+-$5300)

So I got the motors shipped to me from the US, and while waiting randomly drove into a tyre place with for wheel alignment. Driving in a straight line on the painted floor caused loud squeaking! The penny finally dropped! Bought 4 new tyres! Boom
No more clunk, no more esc flashes, even the steering is smooth and light! fixed! Just peeved that i spent $1000 on the now unused motors. Also the car was at the dealer 2 times and they could not point out the tyres!! What do we pay the "experts" for again?

What tires did you have on that were causing the problem?

Were they different makes and/or tread patterns?

Was there much difference bewteen the tires in respect of the remaining tread depths?

When I bought it, it had 4 relatively new tyres, but one got a deep cut while I drove it down for collection. So in bought 2 new tyres and had them fitted. I knew about the rule of having the same tires on an axle, But they were a different brand.

Guess I could have saved a lot of money and trouble if I just read about the touareg needing all 4 tires identical, should have bought 4 but the money was a bit tight after just having bought the thing...

The tread depths were initially not very far off. But the new tires are actually Visibly taller than the old ones when stood next to each other, even though they are also 255/55/18.

I feel stupid for making this mistake, who knows what damage I did to the drivetrain, but the weird thing was that it did not manifest problems until about 5000km later...

So now, I guess next in the list will be Centre bearing (i'ts going to go soon, I can see some "cracks" in the rubber, probably followd by diffs...

If all is okay now, I think you should be alright.

I suspected you didn't have identical tires fitted from your post but I wanted to be sure as fitting 4 identical new tires has now helped out several folk with transmission creaks and groans.

It's amazing the car is so sensitive to this, but it is so we just have to live with it.

I'm about to put my 4th set of tires on the car and each set has worn very evenly apart from tire edges so I know I need a full alignment again.
