I was very unhappy with the stock audio speaker in my 2012 TDI Lux. If you call a VW dealer, they don't even know what the sizes are for the Tweeters & Midrange/Woofers. The tweeters are mounted in the back of the removable door panel and the midrange/woofer is mounted in the door frame. Please know that the tweeter filter/capacitor is actually mounted mounted in the woofer (see photos.) I decided just to replace the midrange/woofers with a nice two-way speaker and use the existing tweeters, because if you remove them, you have to order a new mounting piece from VW for the door. I had to have custom mounting boxes made to accommodate the new speakers wit a new capacitor for the tweeters.

Thanks BFH, I measured them again for you and they are indeed 7 inches. They are sealed in the housing (or mounting bracket when you remove them.) I replaced them (all four) with 6.75 Focal165CA1 speakers mounted in custom built housings the installer made for $25 each. I did not replace the tweeters up high in the doors, as they seemed too difficult and costly to deal with. The end result is they sound better, but there is not enough power in the stock head to drive them properly. Will need to have a 4 or 5 channel amp to make them perform better. A small subwoofer would help too.

Thanks Cruzcat! As I have a TDI Lux, I'm more interested in getting some better/clearer speakers without the need for an amp, due to the lack of space to mount one out of sight. So far I don't have a problem with the loudness just want something a little clearer with more separation. I really wish there was some more EQ adjustment available in the factory radio. Bass/treble adjustments just aren't cutting it! I at least need a midrange to scoop (that usually does the trick on other factory stereos for me.

Good idea, I'll check it out, thank you. The other thing I might look into is a audio optimizer like the JBL MS-2 Car Audio Optimizer. Crutchfield has a video demo on it you can check out. Agree that there is limited control with current Bass-Treb adjustments in stock head. My 2009 Passat at half the price had a wonderful stereo. For an SUV at this price, they should all come with the DynAudio standard.

Speaker depth

Thanks for the pictures and your experience.

When you get a chance could you please post the depth of the speaker from the top of the cone to the ring that attaches to the door and from that lip to the bottom of the magnet?

Good luck to you Xylene. If you choose, you can in fact remove the tweeters without breaking anything, but in oder to install new tweeters, you may have to clip or shave the plastic tabs that are connected to the door panel which the tweeters sit in.

Do the factory speakers have built in crossovers? I want to use a 5 channel amp 4 channels for the doors and 1 for a sub. I thought this should work if I install an Audiocontrol line output converter out from the factory radio/amp then to the aftermarket amp then back out to the door speakers and my new sub. Seems like this is what everyone adding a sub it doing. I was told there could be a problem burning out the tweeters. Any help? Thanks.

Thanks for the note....I too plan to add a 5 channel amp in the near future to add some power for the four doors and a sub I plan to mount in back. The speakers I replaced them with have crossovers, but I don't think the factory one's do (unless you have a Dynaudio system) just the capacitors.

Spacers are on the way...

From the "2011 Touareg sound system .... Poor sound quality?" thread, I was able to locate the spacers on ebay... http://www.ebay.com/itm/2006-Mk-V-Volkswagen-VW-GTI-Speaker-Adapter-Plates-/380112526081?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item588078db01

I still have to figure out what to do with the tweeters. I have a set of audison Voce AV6.5 components to put up front and a small custom sub from my last vehicle. I have two compact amps that I also will be using, an Arc audio XXD4080 and XXD2080 amps.

I'm curious to know how different the sound will be considering that it's only a speaker swap. I hope better sound quality

Keep us posted
I know this thread is just a speaker swap, but I plan on adding an amp.

Running a more efficient quality speaker will always improve the sound. Basically anything better then mass produced oem speakers will improve your sound.

Can anyone who has a speaker swap only comment whether there is a noticeable improvement in sound quality?

So it has been 6 months since the last reply. Can anyone comment on the improvement cost vs benefit for the referenced upgrades? Can anyone post a parts list of what's needed for a speaker swap? Can I get away w/o adding an amp, or is that necessary for any worthwhile speaker swap?

Thank you in advance to any contributors.

You really need better speakers and an amp to liven and clean things up... But once you do that you might as well process it and add a small sub... My experience can be found here...(It has all the answers to your questions) http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f45/my-audio-upgrade-12-tdi-sport-nav-74156.html
