As with many folks on the forums, the insulation on the wires in my headlight assemblies were degraded and many of the wires were bare. I recommend that anyone with an older Touareg REMOVE AND INSPECT the wires in your headlight assembly and maybe even wrap them in electrical tape as a preventative measure.

My Symptoms: The driver side turn signals would not work (front and rear, the one in the side mirror worked fine). When I checked the bulbs they were fine but the fuse was blown. I replaced the fuse and it immediately blew again. I ran the VAGCOM and got the error listed below. When I pulled the headlight and looked inside many of the wires were bare copper and were shorting against the internals of the assembly. I was lucky because I caught it before the ballast and computer were damaged.

Since my headlights were very discolored and the wiring was in such bad shape I ordered replacement assemblies (vw headlight assembly | Partsgeek.com). NOTE: Valeo was the OEM brand that was already in the TREG. These new units look amazing! It took only about 10 minutes per side to move the ballasts and bulbs over to the new unit and reinstall. The only tricky part was removing the gear assembly. I found the two screws, that when removed, allow this to come off and give you access to install the ballast. (See pics)
