Should TDI Shudder?

I picked up a "fixed" 2012 Q7 a few weeks ago. I've never driven a diesel and don't know if this is something to be expected or if it is a problem.

I've noticed that on occasion, while briefly stopped or at a light, I can feel a lateral shudder/rumble in my seat. It doesn't feel like it comes through the wheel or from the front. Its almost like the exhaust is doing a little shudder. I thought it was only when the engine wasn't up to operating temp but I've felt it when it was warmed up.

Normal? Something to worry about? Thank you

Not an issue so far on Generation 2 cars and in any case the prop shaft won't be rotating as the OP''s complaint is that the shudder happens when the car is stationary.

If there's a serious problem with some of the injectors, the ECU could have trouble keeping the idle stable, and that could result in that. Engine mounts could also be worn (either as a consequence of the former or for other reasons). Check the idle stabilization values using VCDS to exclude a problem with the injectors.

You should also have a look at the engine itself to see whether it's the source of the vibration. You can put something on it carefully to see the vibration better. Obviously you have to do that with the engine cover removed.

Also, does the problem go away when you put the transmission into neutral or park? Or does it stay the same? If it goes away, there could be something with the torque converter or transmission.

I have this problem occasionally but only at startup. Feels like its miss-firing and then after about 30 seconds it is gone for the rest of the trip. Not every day and not only on cold days, but definitely after a long stop / when the engine is cold.
Local mechanic could not see anything obvious wrong on the OBD (on-board diagnostics) device he connected to the vehicle.

Clearly this engine behavior is related to the temperature of the engine. Anyone with further advice? :)

Thanks for the input guys. Great forum! It seems like you guys are a lot more into wrenching than the majority of the Audi forums. The A/C was a good suggestion. Today it was a little cold and I didn't run the A/C and I didn't notice anything. I'll do some testing and pay better attention to the conditions when it happens.

I just bought a used 2012 Touareg TDI with 50K miles. I noticed the same thing while idling after cold start. But it is currently 80 DegF so its not really a cold start. I only noticed it when I am idling at a light. I feel a lateral shudder in the seat for a second or two and I notice the rpm gauge move slightly at the same time. It seemed to happen every 10 or 20 seconds. (long light in city traffic.). What is the best way to diagnose? Just turn off the AC and see if it continues? If it is the AC what is the repair??

It is slight & very short lived - nothing to worry about. When an engine is cold and warming up, obviously some system get up to operating temperature faster than others, so there is an imbalance. So don't expect 100% nominal performance from T+0.

That's weird. Mine does not. Only when cold. Perhaps you have a "dirty" throttle position sensor. Try this: with key off, rapidly press accelerator pedal all the way to the floor on & off 15-20 times. Might clear up problem. I've done this on more than one vehicle, and it fixed the problem!

I scanned my car for fault codes and it came up with the following:

----Air Conditioning Codes Scan Report----
1 Air Conditioning Trouble Codes:
1. 15360256
Komponentenschutz aktiv

Everything I find says that is just a security issue around using unauthorized parts. I bought it used to it is certainly possible. I am not sure if it is related to the shudder but I generally don't believe in coincidences.
