Serpentine belt snapped

New ownership to a Touareg continues to be interesting. Was driving and power steering went and battery light came on. Pulled over and had a quick look in the engine bay - the serpentine belt was clearly at fault.
Having gotten towed home and managed to inspect in daylight, it seems that something has seized and caused the belt to bake and then snap - plenty of baked on deposits on the various pulleys.

I’m tempted to think it’s the air conditioning compressor, but what’s the best troubleshooting (asking here before I do anything).
Can I just grab and rotate everything to see if it will move?

Definitely the aircon compressor (bottom right as looking at the engine from the front) as everything else turns ok (some of the tensioner pulleys are a bit noisy). Getting a different garage to come and have a look shortly.
Will assume I’ll need to replace the aircon compressor, new pulleys and tensioner, and a new belt.
Access doesn’t look too bad.
Is there anything worth doing at the same time?

I had the previous garage quote to do the timing belt (although the main one is a chain, apparently there’s a belt for the fuelpump?) but I’m going to bin them off and get this other lot to do that.

(will upload scan when I’ve got back to my desk)

Theres obviously a load of Intervention load Management errors but I'd expect that from the fact it hasn't got the alternator going and assume shut down a bunch of things.
Battery is on charge to make sure it doesn't die.

Can't see anything particular about the compressor dying though...

#15 ·
Yes it appears to be a mechanical issue not seen in the electronics. Could be a siezing pulley and the pulley with the most damage is the most likely to be the cause if this is the case. How old was belt and its wear versus the wear limits ? Has it ever been changed during the 100k miles on the car ? if not, its past its expected life time IMHO

#20 ·
That's from my gen not his... if you guys really want to bust balls....
Regardless of what any manual says, he didn't change it it time... there's no "schedule" for how long a belt will last when a component fails

Also, can you someone define "usual conditions" for me?
RTFM. Apparently usual is not dusty. Lol. Seriously, what does it say on page 28?

Ok I have a 2014 TDI and had the same problem with the serpentine belt going out and taking all the pillows with it. If they had replaced the belt at regular intervals like they should it would have been a 200.00 job but instead it turned into a 1500.00 job. When I asked the service why they don’t replace the belt at 50 or 100 k he looked at me with a straight face and said they do a visual inspection at every service . A lot of good that did me.

What @SaVAGeSoot is arguing with you about is that, more than likely your pulley's bearings were already getting worn and took out the belt. The belt, while robust, is not going to harm the pulleys. The belt doesn't stop unless a pulley stopped. If a belt breaks and wraps around things, the crank may yank on it but the belt will get shredded before it ever hurts a pulley. If you have a unique failure mode proving otherwise, I would actually be interested to see it. I don't mind learning about new and unique failure modes. I just had an auxiliary water pump push water into the electrical wiring affecting my air temp, hood latch, and airbag crash sensors. Anything is possible.

My pulleys were ok except one that was a bit noisy, but because the belt had clearly started baking once the aircon compressor seized, it left baked on parts of belt on every pulley. Main ones can be cleaned but as everything’s off, I might as well get the tensioner ones swapped. But I suppose even regular belt changes wouldn’t have stopped this happening (due to the aircon compressor seizing).

Further expanding on what @Mexglx clearly had more patience than me to spell out, the belt only rotates in conjunction with all the pulleys (rollers that either drive it - like the crank one, or that are driven by it - like the alternator) and all the idlers (simple rollers including the sprung one - aka tensioner). If any of of the driven components (compressor, pumps, alternator) wear out and start providing more resistance than can be overcome by the friction provided by the belt onto the respective pulley, then, the belt essentially starts doing a burnout on said roller. Idlers\tensioners with noisy bearings are screaming for help and are giving you an audible notice that frictional forces have increased and that you're about to have a bad day. Ignore the signs and heat + wear accelerates, and eventually they seize up completely, or just enough to start damaging the belt at an accelerated rate. The belt is a purely a victim of these kinds of degradations, as well as a wear component itself, where it's effected by time in service and it looses its optimal properties.

A belt that fails, will typically take out other surrounding stuff as it wraps around it and rips things apart, or suddenly stops something like another component from spinning, but if said component is a simple idler, it wouldn't hurt it.

Thanks for the explanation. It makes sense. Now I’m dealing with a whine between 45and 55. I was told it was the rear differential. I had a guy replace but still had the whine so I had him put the old diff back in .So 1300.00 later I still have the whine so he wants to replace the drive shaft. I asked what happens if that doesn’t work . His reply was if that doesn’t we csn replace the transfer case. Are you kidding me? I guess it’s a matter of if he runs out of things to replace or so run out of money. Which ever comes first😂
