Sat Nav Problem

Hi Guys
I have just purchased a R50 and love it:D. I have a problem with the Sat Nav system or it may be the operator. The screen shows the red arrow about 300 KM off the coast of Sydney. Arrow seems to move but not in the right place. I did not get a CD with the car, is this the problem. I have been working my way through the RNS510 manual but any advice would be appreciated.

sounds like the GPS antenna/puck is cactus.

Get one from here. RNS510 gps antenna | eBay
Thanks Steve. Checked ebay, cheap. Where is this located in the car? I am guessing this unit finds the satellites. Is there any way I can check in the car if it has found any satellites?
I'm about to head to work.
If I get a chance today...I'll PM you with info/Links etc regarding the matter.

You will need a special set of 'keys' from your dealership (check the owners manual/folder - you never know, the previous owner/s may have already purchased them). Impossible to remove the RNS with out the keys....or destroying your dash/RNS. The GPS antenna is connected at the rear of the unit, and the 'puck' has a magnetic base and will sit as high as possible under the dash.

Fair to say that your present antenna is probably the original and although it will be plugged into the rear of the unit, the 'puck' itself may well be hidden in the roof etc. Not sure of the R50 antenna location ex-factory. Maybe Bails or someone else who owns one, will chime in. However, an aftermarket antenna will do the job very well. Overall...it's a 5 minute job to disconnect the old and install the new.

They look like this:

and are inserted like this:

Cost about $20 - $30 for the set of 4 from any good Audi/VW Dealership near you.

The factory GPS antenna is located under the front right mudguard (fender). If you are replacing it with a puck antenna, just leave the OEM unit in place.

Press the Map Button twice and select GPA Data from drop down list.

G'day
If you were planning to change, I'd suggest look at Zenec units...
thanks i will look at them today
another little problem that I have is I have dynaudio speaker system but the main speaker drivers side front and rear don't work and someone said it Is probably the amp I have checked head unit with another one and they still don't work so is this an aftermarket thing I should get or genuine replacement if I can afford it
Congrats on the R50 purchase, Steve and Hedditch are the goto guys for your questions, but I'm curious as to what colour, mileage and where your R50 lives in this big land of Oz. Seeing you mentioned the GPS has you in the Pacific off Sydney, does that mean you are in or near Sydney. This isn't Bails' recently sold R50 is it?

Congrats Carpetcut on your new puchase as well. I'd suggest the same Goto Guys as I did with Ecca, and pose the same questions for you (colour, mileage and home). Regarding the sound system, I beliewve all R50s had the sat nav as standard but bluetooth was an option as was the reversing camera.

Hi Schootsie. I did a lot of looking before I purchased the car. Unfortunately they are getting old now and hard to find a good one at the right price. Mine is Biscay blue with 105,000 Km on the clock. I purchased it out of NSW but I live in Victoria. Is this "Bails" car?
Hi John I posted a reply but it is not showing up. Not sure what I have done to repeat the original message.
Hi Hedditch. Pushed map button twice and found the Satellite list. 0 of 14 sats so I guess the Aerial is broken like Steve suggested. I have not heard back from Steve as yet. Do you think I should take the punt and buy the new aerial or is there more I can check.

Bails car had more kms on the clock than 105

Sorry...been busy :(

Ah...yes. I'd bite the bullet, grab a GPS antenna (look for a UK supplier - I trust them more than the Chinese knock-offs. Delivery time will be the same if not better ex-UK).

Once the antenna is replaced, it may take the RNS about 20 - 40 minutes to re-calibrate it's satellite fixings. I recommend you go for a drive, with the map screen open on the unit. You'll see it get a fix and locate itself correctly.

When all that is done...PM me...I'll have a "care package" to provide to you :)

Any questions...at any time. Just ask.
I didn't read it in any of the posts but before you buy anything just check if the antenna is connected on the back of the RNS

thanks Drag. Currently trying to buy the special keys to remove the sat nav to have a look. Dealer is not sure what I am talking about. Anyone have the part number for the keys? I think I may have to try a few dealers for the keys. At least I will find a good dealer for the future.
