I recently did the first oil change on my new to me '05 V8. The STP branded filter that came out looked terrible (see below)! Made in China and not very robust looking.

The twist you see was how it came out of the housing while still attached to the plastic cap.

Installed for less than 3k miles. Just say NO to cheap filters!

IMO, it's false economy to ever use anything than the car maker's branded filter from their franchised dealer - any cost saving is low and the risk of getting a filter which fits physically but has the wrong specification is high - or worse

I had a similar problem with a Purolator oil filter.
Twisted like yours also both plastic ends came unglued.
Last Purolator for me.
I haven't tried yet but have been told that Mobile 1 filters are number one rated.

VW tech here, Most of the OEM filters end up looking like that after the long change interval (10k miles) nothing to really be worried about unless the element truly is crushed in on its self restricting oil flow in which the bypass valve would open and feed your engine unfiltered oil.
