Hi I have a probl with removing the spark plugs from my V6. It's done 55k and today had to have the coils replaced by a local dealer, whom advised me that my sparks also needed to be changed. He also said that they were rusted on and will be almost impossible to remove, I enquired how much it may cost me and was quoted approx ÂŁ250-300! This included, new plugs at ÂŁ10 each, new coils again ÂŁ30 and that it take approx 1-2hours because there were rusted on! SO has anyone out there had the same prob and if so how did you manage to get them out, as I feel that I can easily do this with a pal whose a mechanic!

All help needed!! ;0

If you have an aluminum head he must have meant galvonic corrosion due to the disimilarities in the metals.I would leave it sit with liquid wrench or something sprayed on the plugs and gently try to loosen them without pulling the threads out of the head.

I don't deal with spark plugs but am wondering if it makes sense to install new plugs with copper anti-seize on the threads to avoid this problem in the future?

It is always a good idea to use anti-seize when working with aluminum heads, and to be careful to torque to the correct specifications. My indy mechanic used to insist that we change plugs every two years in my air cooled Porsches to avoid having the plugs freeze. He now recommends three years or 30k miles just to be safe on the Touareg and Boxster.
