I have a 2005 V8 with 43,000 miles. Just purchased it used about 3 months ago used. Great car and a lot of fun to drive. Very happy with the purchase.
The brakes started squeaking about two weeks ago. Got a quote from a VW dealer (where we have purchased 3 VWs) to replace the pads and rotors, said only about 10% left on the pads and the rotors are glazed over - all 4 wheels. Said the rotors cannot be "machined", so all needs to be replaced. Well over $1K of service here in Ohio, USA.
Took it to a used car dealer, who I trust and have been doing business with for the past 10+ years (Non-VW cars) with an excellent service center. Said they could order the pads and sensors from VW and and would "machine" the rotors for around $500 - all 4 wheels. Said I had about 20% worth of life on the pads.
My Question is what happens if I machine the rotors, does VW not recommend this? If they are still the acceptable thickness is it ok? I know the Touareg is expensive to service, but only spending a third of the price on pads would be so nice.
Thanks,
