Yes, the racks have to be unlocked to move them. Flip down the outer cover, unlock with the key, pull down the main handle gently while manipulating the tab on the inside of the rack. The handle should then fully lower to a near horizontal position. Repeat on the other side. Slide the rack to the large opening on the rail, remove.

 

Excellent. Thanks. So my next step is to get a key cut before I can do anything. :-| I just find it so annoying to hear the noise from the rack itself when driving. (When I bought the Treg, the rack was already split and not pull back to the end like it should be.)

 

No Prob. If you do decide to just move the rack, the small notches in the track rail are the stop positions and the rack will only lock in those spots.

You can call Thule and get new locks or a professional locksmith can do it for you. Mine was about 10 bucks

 

Get you key from Thule, it will be so much cheaper. You just plug the lock core code into their site and tell them how many you want. Thule Here is the link on their site to order keys from.

 

Thanks for the info guys, I just got mine,ordered the keys but couldn't get it to open.
with your horizontal tip and some wiggling they came free. lots of dirt and grime down
inside the locking covers. should be a piece a cake now.

 

Does anyone know of what style roof mounts / adapters fit in the existing Touareg roof rail tracks? I want to remove the factory rails / bars by sliding them out and slide new roof rack mounts into the track for a custom rack install.
