If the dealer, on whose lot the vehicle sat, drove it at least once a month, long enough to get it up to normal operating temperature, and performed required annual service, then there should be little risk. Also, there is the bumper-to-bumper, 36,000 miles or 36 months new car warranty, and the 10 year or 120,000 miles power train warranty, both of which should cover any potential issues caused by the vehicle not being used for two years. Finally, there is the additional emissions warranty added by VW to cover any potential problems caused by the emissions ‘fix.’
We just purchased one of these vehicles, and are very pleased with it so far. Immediately before it was sold to us, the dealer (Chapman VW in Tucson AZ) changed the engine oil and filter, flushed the brake fluid, and changed all the wiper blades, in addition to performing all other annual inspection requirements. They also completely filled the fuel tank and the AdBlue (diesel exhaust fluid (DEF)) tank.
As I type these words, my wife and I are waiting at the dealer while they address a few minor issues (none of which are related to the vehicle having sat for two years), and check the vehicle’s navigation database to see if it is the most current version. If it is not, they will order the current version and install it.
All-in-all, we are very pleased with the condition of the vehicle, the process of purchasing it, and fixing the few minor issues we have identified with it. As of this date, we have no reservations recommending others consider the purchase of 2016 VW Touareg TDI, if it has been properly maintained and serviced by the dealer.
