This is still a work in-progress. I will be updating this post as I make any progress or getting parts

PRE-STORY:
I recently purchased a 2017 VW Touareg VR6 Wolfsburg Edition with 35k miles here in US. Love the car but I am lacking a memory seat option big time! I share my car with my girlfriend.

BEFORE YOU START:
  • ✅ Find out if you can / have someone who can remove a “component protection” from a new driver seat module. It is not guarantee that a new seat that needs to come with a new module (under the seat) will go into the component protection (it is a VW anti-theft parts program) but if it does, you need to be able to do it. I have a VW guy who can do it (not a dealer) for around $200.

PARTS NEEDED:
  • 7P1959769C - Memory seat module (got off 2017 Executive)
  • 7P6867439F - Driver door trip panel w/ cut-out for the memory seat
  • 7P6971121AA - Driver door panel wiring harness that has a connector for memory seat module (got off 2016 Lux).
Can be sold together with a door panel. Just make sure it comes w/ memory seat
  • 7P6971161KT - Driver door module to “A-pillar" wiring harness. It would have two addition wires - see PIC 2-3
I did not end up getting it because my stock wiring harness has the same part number and A-pillar connector has two additional wires - see PIC 2
  • 7P68575015A - Driver door mirror that supports Memory seat and Auto-fold (got off the same 2016 Lux and it comes with Auto-dimming).
Get a mirror off 2015+ Lux or Executive trim - part number may differ. To replace the mirror, take the door panel off and on top corner (next to the mirror) there will be three holes behind a tape. Take the tape off and unscrew it. Remove the speaker on the bottom. Unplug the mirror connector from the door module (see new mirror connector for reference. Remove the mirror with the wire. Through the hole from the speaker on the bottom, help to push a new mirror wire. No need to take anything else, other than speaker.
NOTE: You can get a different color mirror and replace the top cover - HOW TO LINK
  • 7L6 868 243 (optional) - door panel clips. You may brake a few while removing or trying to put a panel back. I think there are 8 clips to door panel. So you can get 16.
  • 7P6857502FC - Passenger door mirror that supports Memory seat and Auto-fold (got off the same 2016 Lux and it comes with Auto-dimming). Same process to replace the mirror on passenger side as on driver (see above)
  • 7P1959565E (optional) - Driver door mirror switch - has nothing to do with Memory seat but allows to have Power folding mirrors
  • 🔲 Driver seat that is off 2015+ Lux or Executive trim with the module.
My car comes with cooled seats so I need to find a Heat, Cool w/ Memory seat.
Memory Seat comes with additional wiring inside that and communicates to CAN, unlike non-memory seat that is driven by Power and Ground only.
  • 🔲 000979159E - 2 additional wires (this is TBD)
So the idea here is to get two wires from Seat module to Door module:
    • from Seat Module (J810 T32K/15 or/br + T32K/16 or/gr) - see PIC 1 >
    • into connector between body and door (T25/3 + T25/2) - see PIC 2 >
    • from connector between body and door to Door Module (J386):
(I can SKIP this because got a new door wiring off the Car with memory seat so it has this all already)
      • T25/3 from door connector WHITE wire into Door Module T20/14 - see PIC 3
      • T25/2 from door connector WHITE wire into Door Module T20/15 - see PIC

CAR PROGRAMMING:

✅ ! DO A BACKUP FIRST !

Using tools like VCDS, run an Auto-scan and print / save the result. This will be our back-up

✅ Power folding mirrors (just needed two auto-folding mirrors, folding mirror door switch and coding below):
  • Pass door (J387): Control unit 52 > long coding > Byte 4 > Bit 4 + 6 - Activate
  • Driver door (J386): Control unit 42 > long coding > Byte 4 > Bit 4 + 6 - Activate
Reference long coding - 011D17205C00453005080001 (no memory seats)
  • Central conv (J393): Control unit 46 > long coding > Byte 7 > Bit 7 - Activate
Memory seat (still researching so not 100% accurate):
  • Check if the seat module is in "Component protection". If yes, remove it first (see BEFORE YOU START section on the top). Note, you still should be able to move the seat
  • Clear airbag error on dash - it is expected because you connected a new seat module
  • Programming:
    • Control unit 36 > long coding > Byte 2 > Bit 0 - Activate
    • Verify Byte 5 = 15 - only for the seat with ventilation / cooling
  • Go to Hidden MMI menu:
    • Hidden menu > car > cardevicelist
    • Activate front seat memory
    • Activate rear seat memory
    • Hidden menu > cart > carmenuoperation > Set seat to 1
    • Reset MMI (press and hold Setup + Confirm + Navigation button)
    • MMI shuts down and restarts - about 60 seconds.
  • Perform driver seat adoption - move it in all directions all the way till it stops

CONCLUSION:
I believe I covered it all as far as I know as of now. I am still searching for the Driver seat from the right car (that comes with memory seat off the factory - aka Luxury and Executive trims). I will be updating this post as I progress in this Retrofitting project.

I am going to sell some of my original parts out when I am done so this project is not as expensive. I am doing this only because I have a 2017 37K mile car. If you have a higher mileage car and can find a replacement, I would of course just buy a car that comes with all of these from the factory.

@chewblekka or @nickyt is the retrofit junky - anything??
@chewblekka is there any chance you could share a wire diagram for:

- driver seat w/ memory - I need to connect two additional wires from seat module to CAM)

- driver door wiring harness - I bought new wire harness for the door card and also door to body but I want to make sure the pins are all the same and I do not need to re-pin the door

- rear view side mirrors - I am still not sure if I will replace and connect mirrors to memory (may as well) but in case I do.

I will try to get access to either ELSA or ERWIN when get all the hardware. Thank you anyways!

No worries at all! Thank you so much for getting back to me. I hope there’s too much hassle with a house swap! Hopemits
I am trying to compare this driver diagram to non-memory seat one - to see which two cables I should add for CAM bus. Might take me some time to go over it. Where did you get the diagrams from, if you don’t mind me asking?
Since I’d be taking the door apart, decided to also retrofit power folding mirrors and according to this article - HERE , if I have a correct window switch and mirrors (with auto folding motors and hopefully auto dimming for the drive side), its plug and play in terms of wiring. Of course some coding needed.

Hi @chewblekka , could you please share a diagram of
1) 25 pin connector connector that comes out of the driver door (see picture below) and
2) the other side of it that goes from the doorway inside? This is for the car with memory seat. Thank you l!
I bought a wiring harness for the driver door of a car that comes with memory seat. So I just need to figure out a) which of these white wires are for the memory seat (T25/3 and T25/2) and the corresponding side that goes from the doorway connector to the seat (J810 T32/15 or/br and T32/16 or/gr) as shown in one your pics (4).

Hi! I'm thinking about doing the same. It's just some bizarre misunderstanding that US Wolfsburg Edition do not have memory seats. Anyway, in my research I came into a conclusion that you don't have to replace the entire seat (that's my theory, correct me if I'm wrong😅) but you need:

Different seat front/back/down/up/recline/angle up/angle down/back/recline front switch
Different lumbar support switch
Seat module
Seat bottom harness (wiring is completely different, everything goes through the seat module)
Seat backrest harness (maybe just adding hall sensors wires and connectors will be sufficient)

After rewiring it should be the same seat as memory one. Had a look at motor numbers and they look the same for memory and non-memory, on electrical diagrams there is a difference in lumbar support motors where they have hall sensors connected but again motor numbers are the same so hall sensors should already be there. Seat front/back, down/up, angle up/angle down, recline back/recline front motors look like they don't have hall sensors and they are not present in memory seats either. Don't really know how difficult it is to rewire the backrest, bottom harness should be fairly easy.

It would be good for somebody with access to ETKA to confirm that... That's my angle on that.

Will the seat module really go into component protection after plugging it in? Replaced seat module a few times in a Skoda Superb 2 and there was no issue with that.

BTW Great write-up!, when I will decide to go with that retrofit I will try to add my remarks to this post.

Hey! Totally agree that it’s nonsense that the car came in 2017 to “replace” Lux trim and does not have folding mirrors or memory seat!
As far the the retrofit, my honest opinion is that if your Touareg is not unique, in terms of condition, mileage or anything else (like history or just love the car) I would probably just get with memory seat of the factory, like Lux or Executive.

But now back to retrofit! First of all, replacing the seat is easier if you have one available locally. Just get it of the tight trim! The wiring can be b*tch and as far as I understand (based of research on Ukrainian internet space), the wiring is different for memory and non-memory seat. Because you are adding 2 more wires to each adjustment - CAN requests current position and CAN readjust seats as per memory. It is however possible that Wolsburg edition or cars made in last 2017 year have all the wiring in place. But I have another problem!

Memory seat module is not responding - it does not come up as installed module in VCDS. I was suggested to replace the drive door module which I have already got from the same car I bought all other parts. Once I install that, 1) I will update this list of parts to include the door module (it also seems to be needed for auto-dimming driver door mirror) and 2) see if memory seat module 36 comes up (I think 06 module for passages side and 36 for driver in VCDS).

I am keeping this thread alive but I am struggling with finding a seat near me. I would prefer that over doing a wiring and getting different parts. Seats go for $250-300 used with Ventilation and Memory. It’s the delivery price that stinks. So I am looking for some local options.

But hey, keep me posted! Btw, don’t forget about two CAM wires from the seat module to driver door module.

I had a look at the lumbar support inside my current seat and it also requires changing - current part number is 7P6881879A, required 7P0881879A. Motors are different (hall sensors are missing). Part diagrams that I was looking at mislead me for the first time 😅

@chewblekka could you please provide a diagram for an auto-dimming mirror on the driver door? My understanding is that there supposed to be a wire or two coming from central rear view mirror to the driver door module and then to the mirror itself for auto-dim to work?

what a headache just because German decided to save on two wires in the car, especially in the last year of production for this Touareg gen…

I’ll look later.

Pretty much every single manufacturer provides wiring harness that are specific to the vehicles trim. It costs millions to include unused wires over the production run.

Here's the wiring diagrams. You really should download the complete 7P service manual that I have uploaded here, it includes all the wiring diagrams.
