Restoring a T1 W12

A friend on mine just got a 2006 W12 on my recommendation. I almost bought one a few months ago but missed it by few pennies !
So I'm helping him fix it.
I will using this thread to post all info considering this project.
The previous owner did some butchering but all will be put back to factory settings.
Some quick pics to start with.

I know that 98 ron is what is recommended for the Touareg and that's what I fill mine with. On the inside of the fuel filler door it says that "Minimum ron should be 95. 98 is recommended." And I believe in the owner's manual it says that although 98 is the recommended fuel octane, however 95 can be used but with less power output from the engine. If that's for the V6, then I'm sure it's a no-brainer to use 98 ron (or equivalent 93 octane in the U.S.) for the V8 and W12 as well.

Left engine cover cleaned and put back with its new VW sourced gasket and the spark plug gaskets. Torqued to spec except one corner bolt torqued as best we could.
New spark plugs torqued to spec: 30nm.
New pcv membranes. Custom made pcv hose for the left engine.
13 liters of castrol 5w30 507.00 spec.
New speed sensor put in.
A coolant flush which took about 18 liters of bottle water then 13 liters of g12evo.
Engine started fine and runs fine except:
First cold start takes two attempts. Previous owner was using ethanol. We will be putting in 98 ron to see if that solves the cold start issue. Might be fuel pressure related. Next on the test list.

Next on the list:
We are removing the valve covers to inspect.
12 spark plugs (NGK) =>
12 Spark plug seals =>
Maybe 12 coil pack if we find any surprises.
2 valve cover seals
12 spark plug valve cover seals.

The W12 has a hard time starting. It takes a few button pushes and even key insertion and gaz pedal applying.
It cranks but does not start. After 4 or 5 attempts it does fire then drives fine.
It runs very lean. This is most probably due to the torn pcv membrane. But it drives smooth.
I'm thinking of putting in a new speed sensor, the famous G28. I couldn't find where they hid it on the W12 then came across this video. So for all of you W12 owner looking for the location of the speed sensor or the impluse sender or the the crank sensor G28 here is a deutsche video :)

Been there, done that. I replaced the membrane on the 3.6 VR6 by one from RKXTech. Easy job (this coming from someone with very basic mechanical skills). It felt good when I started the car afterwards and the hissing went away.

And first issue found is a blown pcv membrane. The W12 has it all in pairs so you have two PCV or oil separators. The left one (bank 1 = passenger side for a LHD) was torn. You need to remove the intake manifold to get to it. The intake manifold is a magnesium solid piece. It can be separated into 3 parts but you better get it in a single. A buck and screws and some hose disconnecting and you lift it off.

Some pics of the torn membrane. The right side is pretty tired too. Both have already been replaced I think. The oil separator block goes for around 200€. So I orderd two rubber diaphragms from Poland. 40€ shipping included.

Note for the PCV on some W21 version, probably US models on the phaeton.: the PCV is not the same design. So careful when buying the membrane.

The exact dimensions taken form a Russian pcv sendor just for reference if you want to make it yourself :)

Nope.
The W12 for both T1 and T2 is an MPI engine. MPI stands for MultiPoint Injection or Port Injection.
The carbon buildup issue is for Direct Injection engines.
Carbon buildup is all that blowby being reinjected through the intake for combustion.
In Port injection fuel is injected, along with that blowby, in the port above the valves which keeps them clean. In Direct injection fuel is injected inside the cylinder below the valves so you lose the valve cleaning effect of all the blowby coming through the intake port.
You will find some slight buildup (slight soot inside the port ) on MPI engines but nothing to do with FSI or GDI engines.

Here is a video explaining all this.

This vehicle a super model. Rare, beautiful, expensive and it makes men drool.

It is a beast!

Not many people know the W12 first appeared in the VW Nardo, a prototype which ran for 24 hours on the Nardo Ring in southern Italy at an average speed of 200 mph!

I've been to the Nardo and circulated in a Jaguar prototype at 150mph which was pretty hairy.

200 plus would have been something else again, especially during the night!

The circuit has a manager whose sole role is to liaise with the local mafia! One of the Jaguar engineers got a tad too friendly with a local girl and had to be shipped home, pronto Tonto!

Nice find!
Weren't that generation susceptible to water under the drivers carpet near a wiring loom which caused deterioration of the wires? With so many faults in different modules I'm wondering if that might be the cause.
Although that low battery voltage is suspect as well.

Yep. 450HP under the hood !
The owner was at his wit's end with it I guess. He just couldn't handle all the errors. And the suspension was throwing errors all the time. He did replace the compressor and the air distribution bock but still couldn't fix it. So he decided to get rid of it. My friend already has a VR6. Now he has a VR6 and Double VR6 :)
One thing to note the intake system is less complicated than the VR6. There is no variable intake voodoo. Less vacuum hoses to fight with. But it has some leaks we are trying to pinpoint, maybe a hydraulic steering leak and a coolant leak. Transmission looks fine and gear changes are good.
