Its time to replace the battery in our 2018 V8 R Line
The current battery was installed in Dec 2019 by VW under warranty so it is a OEM VW battery.
Has anyone used a non OEM battery and how is it performing ?
The cost of the OEM and alternatives is very similar and VW has 2 year warranty while some of the others have 3 years.

Thanks
Kym

Seems strange you are going through batteries so fast you can use any agm battery probably century or better dont touch the cheaper ones like super charge you will need to be able to tell the computer what battery has been installed for the smart charger (alternator)

Our Touareg was built in 2017 and sat in a holding yard in Aus until it was registered in Oct 2018.
I purchased it in Dec 2019 with only 8000Km so I am guessing it was only used for short trips.
While at the dealership having coding done for the new tow bar the battery went flat so they replaced it under warranty.
Since moving into our current house I would leave it unlocked in the garage and recently had some slow cranking issues.
I now lock the car while in the garage.
I generally only drive it once a week for about 15 minutes each way to and from golf which is not ideal for battery life.
Could also be a parasitic drain while sitting unused.
Easter weekend drove 350Km then drove it 2Km twice a day for 3 days in a row then it would not start on the 4th day.
Hence its time to replace the battery.

Invest in one of the CTEK battery chargers if you don't run your vehicle on a regular basis.
You can connect it up to the jump posts under the bonnet and leave it running for days on end. Its smart programming will recondition and slowly trickle charge the battery.

You can pick one up at places like Recpo with auto club membership discounts or During their sale promotions.

The car doesn't go to sleep properly if not locked.
short drives, especially in a hot climate where you are relying heavily on A/C, vented seats, (probably also using start\stop) etc. and a severely drained battery from constantly being "awake"
I have changed my habits and the car has been locked every time its parked in the garage for the last 6 months, maybe too little too late !

Generally it is a short drive to golf once a week but every few months we will travel with the caravan for hundreds of Kms at a time or we will use it to visit the grandchildren about 100km from home.
No start/stop in the V8 R Line, rarely use the A/C and no vented seats we are built tough in Qld.

Looking at the Battery Change History the original was VA03H8E03R which is a lead calcium battery

VW replaced it under warranty and the current one is 381120K0LR which appears to be a AGM battery ?

381120K0LR must be a VW part number as I cannot find any Varta reference to it.

As has been previously highlighted in other posts the charging voltage for Lead Calcium is different than that required for AGM batteries.
The V6 Touareg in Aus uses start/stop which would benefit from using a AGM battery but the V8 does not have the annoying start/stop feature.
I am guessing VW just put the same battery in regardless of it being a V6 or V8

Looks like I will have to unbolt the seat and check what battery they have installed.

You can reset the battery management system for AGM (called "Fleece" by VW) on the later Tregs I think. My 2013 Treg does not have that feature but I have been using an AGM for the last 4 years without issue. As I travel overseas a lot the car can sit unused for 3 months unused and still starts when I return. I dont like leaving the car on my Ctech charger / maintainer unattended for that long as it sits outside

Lifted the seat this morning and found the battery is a OEM VW Battery.
It is indeed a Lead Calcium Starter Battery and the serial number indicates it was manufactured in Nov 2018.
Without the paper work on the side of the battery stating "Lead Calcium Starter Battery" it would not be possible to confidently identify what chemical structure it was.

I am considering using the Repair Cycle of my smart charger to see if it can rejuvenate the battery enough to extend its life.
In order to use the Repair Cycle I will need to disconnect the battery, any idea what settings I will lose after disconnecting the battery ?

I will also be purchasing a Jump Starter to keep in the car, looking at the NOCO GBX75 or GB70

Look up my battery post. VCDS will allow you to pull the history file to get a much better understanding of your battery's condition and what's happening while you drive\park\let it sit for extended periods of time, etc.

Thanks I had read your post but couldn't work out how to get the screens you posted.
Had another look today and found the "Analise" button as you stated a plethora of information available.
I also stumbled on the option to graph the results by ticking the box alongside one or two of the outputs ie. "Actual state of charge" then the "Print Data" box changes to "Graph" click on it to produce the graph.

I have ordered a new battery this morning.
Varta Silver Dynamic 110A 920CCA Part Number in Aus is L1 for this Lead Calcium Battery
Spoke with Federal Batteries who wholesale Varta in Aus who confirmed after some time that it is Lead Calcium.

I'm talking about regular batteries that drop into engine bays, not the behemoth in these Touaregs/Cayenne

My current battery is 5 years old and is perfectly fine

Just replaced the original in my 2014. 11 years is a good run for any battery. I got a 105a/hr Delcor (apparently the same parent company as Varta) for $520 from RJ Batteries. Fitted too. Almost half what the stealers quoted for the part alone ($940).

I've had no trouble using aftermarket batteries just make sure they get the specs right.

New battery has been installed, hooked up my old battery charger to keep power on while changing it over so I wouldn't lose any settings. Failed, as soon as I lifted the old battery out the air suspension tried to self level drawing too much current causing he charger to overload and cut out.
Drove the car yesterday and noticed the Alt Speed Display is off which is a easy fix but the front windows auto up/down doesn't work, rear windows will auto up and down so will need to work out why this is so.

I was quoted $655 for a new battery from the VW Dealership.
Varta L1 is the same battery as the original VW part, purchased the L1 from Bursons for $429

Just replaced the battery in our 2016 150TDI. Not due to going flat just a slight hestitation on occasion when starting from cold. As we’re starting a 10k trip towing a 3.5 tonne van, I didn’t want any surprises. Total cost $606.49 inc reprogramming.
Battery supplied: SC NPCI-SS100H Stop Start AGM Battery
Good news: Installer said it was the first time in ages when plugged in that there wasn’t any faults show up on his screen. Said most vehicles he does show at least one or two faults even prestige European vehicles.

'Prestige European Vehicles' are the king of showing faults, maybe behind American cars. It's not the 80s anymore
