Hi,

I have a 2009 Touareg V6 without a trailer hitch. I'd like to buy a rear-door-mounted bike rack for 3 bikes (2 adult + one kid). There are plenty of choices, but I'd like your experiences and recommendations. Most companies (Saris, Yakima, Allen, etc) haven't tested with Touareg, so their car chooser on their Web Sites comes out empty, the only one I've found is Thule. I'm willing to pay more, as this needs to be 100% solid, can't have the bikes bang up the car, themselves, or fall off. Adding a trailer hitch is not an option.

Any suggestions are welcome!

With the way the glass forms the rear of the hatch, I'm not sure I'd trust a hatch-mounted bike carrier. :- /

Aftermarket hitches are reasonably inexpensive and since you don't need the expensive electronics to plug in a bike carrier, that might be the better option to think about.

My rear hatch glass is OK.

*Note: I've never gone outside the city with the rack mounted, i.e. never exceeded 60 km/h.
