Thanks for the replies. I am wondering if the problems with metal found in front diff oil and front diff failures in older cars (like mine) can be attributed to breakdown of oil. any thoughts or experiences...??????

LOW oil level - as in leaking seals - can certainly cause differential gears and bearings to wear and overheat and that overheating can, in turn, degrade some of the properties of the oil but it is unlikely that the oil would degrade first and THAT would be the primary cause of the failure.
This 2013 Touareg has 48000 miles. Sounds like clicking noises from the engine. Could it be a sign of timing chain failure? Hope it’s not. BTW it’s a VR6 3.6 engine instead of the TDI diesel one.Does it sound normal?

Picked up this beauty at the auction for a little under 2k. It’s a 2011 hybrid TSI with 110k miles.
The driveshaft has been removed for tow-ability so I’ll need to source mount bolts. The whole oil pan is out and all the fluids drained, wires unplugged. I’ll have to put everything back together...
