The local shop said my rear main seal is leaking oil. They said it's an advanced job and they don't have the ability to fix it. I am not a mechanic AT ALL, so any advice on what to do would be great.

It's a 2016 Touareg V6 gas executive edition, AWD. Otherwise in perfect shape. 83,000 miles on it.

What is the cost to fix this?

It's a ton of work, because one needs to drop either the transmission or the engine to access it. Any competent mechanics that knows VWs can do it, I would get a few quotes from other shops, ones that focus on high end european vehicles.

How bad is the oil leak exactly? How often do you need to add oil to keep it topped off? A lot of people would just not worry about it and just keep driving it if it's a slow leep, maybe throw a metal drip pan underneath where you park it.

Thanks for the fast response! I threw a plastic sheet under the car after the car was warm from driving and about 2 hours later there seemed to be about 3 or 4 ounces (90 to 120 ml) of oil on the lid. I got up under the car at the shop and saw it's not just the rear seal but the oil filter housing is also leaking oil, which appears worse than the seal. I thought maybe the filter leak was running down to the seal, but it wasn't. The seal is actually leaking as well. When I wiped the seal with a rag, a few drops formed but it wasn't too bad. I can top off the oil when needed if it will hold up for a while. I was considering selling it until this happened.

I am not familiar with the VR6, but it seems to me the oil filter housing leak will be easy to fix. I would get that fixed, and not worry about the engine main seal which is probably just seeping. I am sure someone who is more familiar with the VR6 will add chime in.

Do your part and fill in you profile so you can get better help.
