Where are you in the world?
It is very unusual for a 3.2 V6 petrol to have a rear battery - presumably in the boot/trunk under the spare wheel?
It was a factory option for cars sold into some very cold climates such as Scandinavia but it's pretty rare.
Some people installed a second battery themselves if they were keen caravanners or campers for example.
The only Touareg to have two batteries as standard was the mighty V10.
In simple terms, the rear battery looked after starting the car whilst the front battery looked after the ancillaries and helped out with the starting process.
The front battery could start the car on its own if the rear battery was duff or flat.
