Rattle passenger valve cover area 15 TDI

2015 TDI, 220k km’s. Just noticed a rattle that comes and goes every second or two. I first noticed when I was in a drive thru and the noise was bouncing off a brick wall.. It’s very faint in the video. Cold and hot.

I just did a 6 hr drive Monday night and she ran perfect. Checked the codes and nothing.

To me it sounds like a bearing failure or something that is rotating but loose. Or maybe just a loose heat shield. Hoping not a chain tensioner or HPFP.

Oil was changed not long ago with a VW filter. Fuel filter 20k ago. I do oil every 8k km’s and fuel filter every 20k so the fuel filter is due. Coolant was done about 65k km’s ago when I purchased it.

Another vid, listen for noise at 39 seconds. I changed the oil filter, no change. When you hear the noise you can see the engine move.

It’s almost like there was a slight miss that coincided with the noise.

I have a stage 2 tune and delete pipes but have not installed them yet. I guess I will hold off until this is sorted.

I could change the fuel filter and do a liquid moly diesel purge. But can’t see how that would help unless it’s missing due to an injector issue.

I have OBD Eleven pro. Only because I’m a mac user. Lol. But it can do most things.

Could be the alternator one way clutch or one of the idler pulleys. Loosen off the belt and check em all

Well, its quite weird metal knocking noise. I would say, that if it is coming from valve cover, it could be rocker arm.
To prevent any further internal damage, I would check it asap.

EDIT: is it louder on right side?
Yes it’s on the right side (passenger side) I don’t think it’s from any of the belt rollers, alternator etc.

I am going to get a stethoscope today and will also add in a friction modifier to the oil and see if I can isolate the noise.

I won’t drive the car until I have identified this noise. Ugh
3.0TDI does not have issues with rocker arms, but something could happen. Its definitely not from pulleys or alternator.
What engine code do you have?
No codes when I ran it yesterday, I will do a scan again today when I get the stethoscope.

I should also note that the other day while stopped at a light I felt the car shudder a few times at idle. Kinda felt like a miss fire.
It does not sound very rhythmic to me. A complete guess.. but maybe a piece of one of the timing chain tensioner guys broke off and is being got by the chain randomly and thrown around the crank case? Sounds like plastic clanking a harder surface to me. Those guides are plastic and known to lose pieces once worn. Complete guess though.

I didn't mean error codes, but engine code. Is it CVVA?
Well, "like misfire" doesn't sound good. If you decide to take it to some shop/dealer, transport it on tow truck.
Until you know, what causes this "rattling sound", it shouldn't be started.
Its A CNRB, and I only found an intermittent fault in the history for bank 1 #4 exhaust gas temp.

Yes that is what it sounds like to me also. Something being picked up a thrown about. :(

Ya definitely not starting it. Outside of maybe running for a minute with the stethoscope, even that could be risky.
What do your injector deviations look like at idle?
What is your chain stretch like? (Camshaft adaptation)
Have you looked at your old oil? (strained it, etc) to see if any debris comes out.... like guide shrapnel, etc.
Are u able to take off valve cover (DIY)?

Will check those, stand by

Oil was changed 2 weeks ago, and it was clean, with no metal no fragments. But I can drain it again if need be.

Normally yes, I have a lift and restore old 928's but I had a major skiing accident and screwed up my neck so it is almost impossible for me to wrench at this time. It may be months of Physio before I can tackle something like this. :(

Sorry to hear that. Take it to some experienced/verified shop. Without taking off the valve cover, its just a blackbox.

I will need to find a good indy in the GTA, not taking this to my dealer. The accident could have been much worse, I went down hard on ice at speed, 11 patrollers around me since I could not move my neck. It was scary, but apparently, my bones are made of titanium, LOL.
The reason I say take the belt off first is because it's the simplest thing to check first. And doesn't involve opening any part of the engine first. If nothing is found then move on to internal components.
I'd say it's probably timing chain guide part also that's getting caught in the valvetrain but since it's plastic it shouldn't last long

The guides\skates should be a hard plastic not metal.

Not in your hood, but I would trust Jeff with something like this, so I'd suggest taking it to him.

Thanks, I will give Jeff a ring. Don't mind traveling for a good tech.

Edit, they are closed for the long weekend so will have to call him on Tuesday.
