R5 TDI Servicing

OK, since as VW has basically told me even though their dealerships are the only authorised, VW trained technicians, it's still my risk as to whether their trained technicians can correctly diagnose and fix problems, i.e. they can get it wrong indefinitely and I still pay, the latest example being their diagnosis of a complete replacement of the transimission when all that was required was the replacement of a seal. You can see why I think this VW $ong just aint the right tune for me any more.

I am now going to have a go at servicing the car myself (and as a backup, I'll take it to an independent for miscellaneous repairs). So, just a couple of questions:
  • Does the R5 sump have a baffle like on the V6 TDI (where the only way to drain the sump oil is to use the sump plug)? i.e. can I use an oil extractor instead of draining from the sump plug?
  • What does one do with the old oil?
  • What's the go with replacing the fuel filter, since as it's PD, I assume it doesn't have a high pressure pump (or dual pump like the V6 TDI)? What is the correct sequence for replacing the filter, i.e. which hose goes off first etc.?
  • Can the filter be checked for water without replacement?
  • How does one check the operation of the seat belt? is it just a yank to see if it still retract etc. or is it more involved given it's integrated with the airbag deployment etc.
  • Anything else? even if you think I should just leave it to the tech, not worth the hassle, let me know and why. I intend to let the expert do the brake fluid flush and power-steering flush.

BTW, I'm not a complete noob, I used to race motorbike and have rebuilt 2 stroke engines, I've also rebuilt a Mini Clubman motor, and when I was a student I used to do alot of the work on my cars to save money. So I'm not shy of getting a bit of grease on my hands.
Thanks in advance.

Well, I've done it, actual time to do a 30k service is roughly 1.5-2 hours, the only thing I haven't done is brakepads and rotor thickness, since as they've only been on for 30k. There are some signs of oil on various lower parts of the car, but I think they could be from when my transmission was leaky, I'll be cleaning it all off with a pressure gun soon and check again.

I've had to buy a fair bit of tools:
  • 36mm socket for the oil filter lid (from specialist tool shop, Repco didn't have it, SCA didn't have it .....);
  • Laser pointer to check for exhaust leaks; &
  • An oil extractor pump.

It's all quite straight forward, except for a couple of dramas:
  • The oil extractor pump hose came off, flicking oil over me and the nearby wall; &
  • The damn spring clip that hold the fuel filter in place took over half an hour to put back on because of a splay on the mounting bracket, I'm not looking forward to this next time either, crouching on top of the engine, under the bonnet, using both hands so no support for my back. I'm thinking I might just buy a screw hose clamp to replace the spring loaded one;
  • I had to VCDS the pump 5 times before fuel would be primed properly (at one point I thought I had stuffed up the fitting of the fuel filter and went and checked all the hoses are in their right place). But persistent paid off in the end when the R5 fired up.

The scan showed 4 faults in the convenience module (adr 46) , so I'm off to google soon to check that out.

BTW, I replaced the air filter but the old one looked perfectly good, so I may be increasing airfilter change to longer period. I tipped the fuel from the old filter into a jar as well, clean fuel, no contaminants, no water, so I think the fuel quality around where I live is good.

Just called Moreton Bay council main number and said hey Sunny Coast council takes oil, why won't Moreton do it, after ringing around they say they do collect oil, cooking or engine :) all good, just have to wait for the filters etc. to arrive now.

thanks schootsie, don't mind driving up there and dropping it off, though I think the local Ford dealer has said just bring it down in milk bottles and pour it into their tank for a couple of bux. I'm surprised to hear they'd just dump it on the sunny coast, given the rhetoric about the council making sunny coast the most sustainable region in the world etc. onya Bob :)

Thanks Matthewf, will be ordering the whole kit from UK tomorrow and hopefully get into it asap.

re' old oil :), I wouldn't be able to sleep at night, believe it or not, there's a bit of a greeny in me, it grates me every time I come accross a VW repair job, like replacing the entire motor because of worn brushes etc.

I rang the council refuse centre today, unfortunately they say I'll have to ask a local workshop nicely if they'd take my oil, from there a recycling mob picks it up in bulk and recycle it. There are strict rules here in QLD, old oil is not discard but is recycled.
