It is some T3s that have the problem, not the T2s.

I have 70K on mine and have not experienced the problem.

I'm still heavily considering getting a Touareg TDI sport and would like to know how many of you have the issue w/ the steering wheel shudder? I've been researching this issue and am trying to decide how prevalent the issue really is. Thanks guys/gals. :drunk:
Most T3s are okay.

But some are not.

Some people insist that it's only a wheel balance problem and, indeed, a forced wheel balance has fixed some cars, but not all.

A tyre change has fixed some others too.

But the simple fact is that some owners are experiencing an NVH problem.

Some of those owners get the vibration from new and others have now reported it when the car has covered some miles.

VW seem unable and/or unwilling to fix these cars and, as a result, some cars are being Lemoned and bought back by VW.

Others have simply been bought back where owners have rejected them and this applies to cars right across the world in both left and right hand drive.

There is no way of knowing which T3 is affected, and therein lies the problem, the depth of which is completely unknown and asking people on a website like this will not give you any idea at all of the size of it: only VW will know that.

Whilst I would happily recommend a late T2 to my best friend, I would not recommend a T3 3.0 Tdi to anyone until such time as the problem is identified and a fix made available.

On VW's performance to date, I do not think there will be a fix and new owners ordering a T3 will have to take pot luck on whether or not they get a dud car.

Buyers purchasing from new or secondhand physical stock on a dealer's forecourt will be in a better position in that they can at least drive the car they might be buying before they do so in order to check it out if they know about the potential problem [and unless they read this site or www.mytreg.com they may not of course].

Inevitably some members on here will moan about this post saying one should not knock VW or the T3, but there IS a problem, some cars ARE duds, and VW is NOT fixing them otherwise they wouldn't be buying them back.

Probably flat-spotted tires from sitting on a cold garage floor overnight. Flat spots 'round out' after a few miles and the NVH ceases.

This is a particular problem for T2s running the optional 19" wheels with the 275/45R19 tires mounted. The very short sidewall tires flat-spot easily overnight. I experienced this problem with the OEM Goodyear tires. Less noticeable when I changed to the Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires.

@Motolegends-
thanks for the response. Do you like the DWS tires? I've a lot of good things about them. With 2000 miles on my Touareg, I hope it is a while before I have to deal with that.

I understand about flat spotting. All the cars I've owned do that. I brought this up in case that maybe some of the steering wheel shake issues were from cold tires.

Love the Conti DWS tires. Second set now. Perfect tire for my driving conditions. Long-wearing, quiet on pavement, good turn-in on pavement, good grip in the wet and snow. Not much more one can ask of a SUV tire.

Check out the other threads here on CT discussing the wheel shimmey/shake on the T3s. Seems to be a growing problem.

I posted a reply to this thread today that might be interesting to you with respect to the T3 wheel shimmy/shake problem -

@MotoLegends-

Yes, quite interesting. I came out of an Outback that had steering wheel shake issue, much like the Touaregs are having. So far I am happy with the VW. It took about a year and multiple road force balances, alignments etc (to no avail) before Subaru finally authorized a permanent fix that involved the replacement of suspension components and engine mounts (I think).

I've only had my T3 TDI for a few weeks but there is no shudder issue and I am very sensitive to this sort of thing. I am also quite happy with the Conti tires. Good luck.

I have only had my 2013 TDI for a week, but so far in the couple of times I have taken it up over 65 it is smooth. Here is hoping that it stays that way.

I had a friend recently ask about which dealer he should use: Pretty close to a decision on a '13 Lux TDI. After what I told him, he's going to another brand.

I love my Touareg, but would I want a friend to buy one? Absolutely NOT! I guess that sums it up.

I have the shakes. Comes and goes. Something not right mechanically. Wish the solution were simple and around the corner, but it doesn't look good.
